Mystery solvedWe moved the hens to a different shed this week and the egg supply went down. I put it down to the move and hoped it would improve. After weeding the veg patch tonight I moved the pallet over the compost heap to put the weeds in and found these! I love the way they have tried to lay them in the old egg boxes for me!

Can you perhaps 'blow' a couple of the eggs and put them in the new nest boxes until they start using them properly?
They will be laying there through habit rather than loyalty.

Got a dummy egg and a golf ball in the new nest boxes, some are laying there, it's only round the other side of the garden, they have the same roaming rights.

Yes, they are quite organised in their laying, aren't they! Wonderful, Julia...

Our hens seem to be creatures of habit. They have their favourite nest boxes - we've got compartments that have never been laid in in our hen houses. I've often seen them queuing up outside the favoured box, chuntering because they want to have their turn, rather than use an alternative box. I've also seen them two in a box, presumably for the same reason.
We're going to need to make ours move house soon so we can put a new floor in the house the bulk of them are currently using.
Our oldest hen decided she'd had enough of my little dog following her around yesterday. She chased her down to the house like a demented goose and poor Fousty was mortified with fear.
I hope the hen doesn't try the same trick with Scruffy or it will be the end of her She's had one already and the cockerel has a few less tail feathers - he bravely ran away.......typical bloke
