| Quote: | Britons are waking up to snow as they return to work after the Christmas break - and the cold weather looks likely to continue for the rest of the week.
Severe weather warnings have been issued for areas from the Highlands to London with widespread icy roads and heavy snow expected.
Forecasters also warned of dangerous conditions as rain falls onto frozen surfaces.
Sky weather presenter Isobel Lang said: "Beware if you are travelling this morning as it'll turn very icy in places as a band of rain, sleet and snow clears away to the south."
The cold snap brought one to two centimetres of snow in the capital and surrounding areas.
The wintry weather is expected to last for the rest of the week, over the weekend and into next week.
"After another severe frost on Monday night, Tuesday will be a freezing cold but sunny day," Lang added.
December 30 saw temperatures plummet to -13C in the Scottish Highlands, while last night Benson in Oxfordshire reached -9C.
Yesterday evening also saw temperatures drop to -7.8C in Pershore, Worcestershire, and -4.3C in Church Lawford, Warwickshire.
The chill prompted water company Severn Trent to appeal to its eight million customers across the Midlands and Wales to protect their water systems.
It came after reports that pipes were freezing even with heating on full blast.
Fraser Pithie, Severn Trent's senior operations manager, said: "We've taken about 50% more calls than on a normal Sunday and most of these are from customers whose private, internal water pipes have frozen.
"Some customers assume it's our systems that have failed, because they have kept their homes heated and yet pipes have still frozen."

| Quote: | A wave of bitterly cold weather has left much of the country blanketed in a covering of snow and ice - and the deep freeze is set to go on.
Temperatures plummeted overnight and severe weather warnings have been issued from the Scottish Highlands down to the South East.
As millions of people head back to work following the Christmas break, the cold snap delayed the return to school for many children.
Sky News weather presenter Isobel Lang said: "Beware if you are travelling this morning as it'll turn very icy in places as a band of rain, sleet and snow clears away to the south."
The cold snap brought a thin, but picturesque, layer of fluffy white flakes to the capital and surrounding areas.
And for those hoping for a respite to the cold, it will be some time before relief arrives - the wintry weather is expected to last right into next week.
"After another severe frost on Monday night, Tuesday will be a freezing cold but sunny day," Lang added.
In Gloucestershire 15 schools closed due to the weather with heavy snow in Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean.
One gritter lorry overturned in the forest as problems were reported on more than a dozen routes.
The decision was taken to close the schools due to heating and access problems, the county council said.
