Thanks for that Townie, but I have 2 questions:

1 - Where can you buy the ingredients?

2 - Isn't Borax poisonous?
Townie

Hi Diana... I've absolutely no idea!   saying that tho, I would imagine that you could source some of the ingredients online, possibly get borax from a chemist..

Its quite an old book early 70's I reckon so maybe a bit out of date with ingredients etc...

I havent got a clue with the borax, but i'll do a bit of research on it when I get home from work tonight..  I thought borax was in most soaps as I recall reading something somewhere about making soap and you had to be careful whilst doing it and wear protective stuff.. hmm.. i'll look into this tonight too

http://www.aromantic.com/ is a possible source for your ingredients.

.... and their comment on borax.....
Quote:
There are two Emulsifiers used in popular products, which can be harmful. The first is Borax (INCI name Sodium Borate). Research in Denmark and Sweden has shown this substance to be carcinogenic. It is forbidden to use these ingredients on children in Denmark, as it is known to cause anaemia. Borax is easy to use and helps to bond fats with water - but extended use of products containing Borax will dry out the skin, making it brittle. According to Danish medical reports, Borax can penetrate the skin, cause powerful irritation and can even cause cancer! Studies of Swedish steelworkers who handle large quantities of Borax would seem to corroborate this fact. It should not be used in Skin Care products.

guess the borax is out the window them.. we'll need to research an alternative
Diana

Thanks WG - thought it was on the "no thanks" list

Coincidentally, I saw a box of borax on the shelf with the other eco friendly cleaning products last time I was out getting groceries. I think it was Asda in Dyce but I would need to check my till reciept to be certain. The box blurb claimed it was eco friendly so I'm wondering about that now.
It caught my eye as I've often wondered who sells it myself. My Mum uses it to wash her hair with when she has a build-up of hair spray as she says it is the only thing that gets it off. It also removes most of her hair dye so it must be efficient stuff

If the reason borax is needed is to bond fats and water, a good alternative would be emulsifying wax. You should be able to obtain it from a chemist in its undiluted state - looks like little white beads.

We make our own soap-free soap from it - melting a little with boiled water and lavender oil in the micro.

I just don't believe this claim "at a fraction of the cost": once you've bought all the ingredients, and messed up your kitchen, and spent time tidying it all up again you'll have spent a lot of money and time for something which you could probably have bought ready made for less money in your nearest health food shop...

Sorry, sorry - don't want to put anybody off! If you make it yourself regularly, it's probably cheaper. And at least you know for definite what's in it.

That's the key for me

My boss's partner is an aromatherapist - she makes wonderful handcreams and bathstuff.
