Mill of KincardineSome of the more local to me might have bought their wonderful asparagus in the past (they also sell daffs, bulbs and sometimes other stuff): however, I'm getting seriously fed up with them. This is the second time now that I've gone and the stall was absolutely empty! Buckets still there, sign up, some change in the box, but no asparagus or anything else.
Does anybody know WHEN they have stuff to sell? As I also went to Fettercairn to buy strawberries and they didn't have any either, this was yet another 10 mile roundtrip with nothing to show for it... Can't afford to blow petrol like that just for fun - and I don't mean financially!
I'll try and find out their name (one of my colleagues helps out with the bulb lifting every year, so he should know), and then maybe phone them. At least they could put up a sign saying when they get their merchandise out...

I've only ever been there when I've been on my way passed, and it's always been empty.
It does any me when places have signs up advertising they have produce for sale and when you get there they don't - I've had that problem with other places too.

That's very annoying - I hope you find the name and thus a phone number so that you can avoid unnecessary trips.
I'd love some local asparagus right now!

Well, a local guy from Fettercairn tells me they are still selling - but no idea when. I'll try again Wednesday afternoon, when I have to go past there anyway.
The new farmshop near Fourdoun is open now - will check out tomorrow and report on it! From what I've heard they sell a lot of "fancy" stuff - not good news.

I'm not sure why farm shops feel the need to go for the 'fancy stuff' - why not good honest local food at reasonable prices.

Have you seen the building? It's huge, compared to what they had before. I suppose they need to fill it with something, and are hoping to attract a certain amount of tourism into the shop, being so close to the A90.

Can you see a business like that surviving? In a town/village maybe, but out in the sticks, with people like us popping along for our weekly veg? Except, we probably wouldn't pop in for our weekly veg unless we happened to be passing...

That's just the problem: either you have the very basic, honesty-box based "shops" (or stalls) that really only offer the stuff that's produced on that particular farm - or the fancy goods, all-singing-all-dancing shop with cafe. I prefer the first type - but even then, they don't work if they are not stocked properly, or closed at unexpected times, so folks will lose their incentive to use them - particularly in current times, where it's either getting too expensive to make extra trips by car, or where people like myself don't do it because they don't want to waste fuel for environmental reasons.

It is as I feared: a proper souvenir shop... Full of knick-knacks - pottery, soft drinks from goodness knows where - with a few strawberries and tatties stuck in the back corner.
