Martin Clunes Islands of Britain

In case you missed this last night (fantastic wee show) - Martin journeys off the shores of Britain, travelling from the most northern tip of the nation to the southerly seas as he visits some of the 1,000 islands around the mainland. Beginning in the Shetlands, Martin makes a hazardous trip to lighthouse rock Muckle Flugga, explores Forvik, Unst, Eigg and Barra and meets former city dwellers trying to create an island paradise.

He was quite visibly blown away by the community spirit on Barra and Eigg bless 'im

a lot of folk complaining up here, especially all the publicity for the forewick holm nutter.
JoH

complaining about what?

Is he doing any harm?

(genuinely interested, not having a go at you)
MJ

oh yes, thousands of pounds of rescue operations, currently parking a unroadworthy landrover on a blind corner on a single track road, there's the any excuse to get into court.

Papa sound is one of the most dangerous in the island group and he goes around in a wardrobe with twin engines. The guys have been out in all weathers for him, but they'd never not go for him, no matter how tempting, they're risking their lives for some one who's having a laugh.

are also quite good for information.

I didn't realise he was one in the same as the OS sailor!

I enjoyed the programme and will continue to watch it, as subject good and usually really like MC but it slightly bugged me.

The surprise at community spirit. Evidently smaller communities often have more spirit than other places but there are areas with great community relations all over the country. Whether rural or not, allotment, some other club.

Just found it a littlepatronising, a bit 'Applecrossy again.'

Maybe he was genuinely surprised. I didn't feel the islanders were patronised nor the viewers. Perhaps its just because its focusing on islands. Maybe where he comes from there is no real sense of community and its just a stark contrast to his normal life. Or maybe he was caught up in the (inevitable but illusional)) romance of it all. Or maybe fame has caused him to be a bit of an island himself and it was just great for him to feel welcomed by genuine folk instead of false luvvies in the acting world.

God knows, am bleetering and could be talking out of my arse

Yup you're right. He apparently lives in a huge farm in Dorset. Maybe no neighbours near by.

I regularly talk out off my ass. I'm rather good at it!
