march workshop craft group

i thought it was a good idea to discuss this.

this next time, i believe dale is into showing us a bit of folk art, and pointing us in the right direction, although ill leave it to dale to confirm that.

also anything anyone else wants to do is great we will need to discuss a new more suitable date for this i think, perhaps when we have established who, or how many, and where they are situated, we can have a poll on that.

firstly i think we should have a poll on who is into it and who isnt. etc

if non of the options are worded correctly for you, then please pm me and i will add another one
Runt

I can't answer because I'm new and have no idea where they are usually held  - I just moved up to Aberdeen if it's held anywhere near here?
kimmie

Runt its over at Turriff....which is the main Aberdeen to Banff road  for you...probably take 45 mins ish from aberdeen(without the snow and ice)...hope that helps

craft

Hi Smooth Hound,

I've voted for the top option but, as ever, will depend on weather and or work commitments.

Just in case anyone is thinking of coming but can't decide - the craft nights are an excellent place to meet Neeps and share knowledge of the craft in question but also many other topics. It doesn't matter if you aren't particulary crafty (or feel that you aren't) there are opportunities to try lots of things without the need to buy expensive tools or equipment.

The evenings are well worth the effort - Smooth Hound is an excellent host!!!

thanks bracken

id also like to point out that it would be good to work out shared transport, and also come the warmer weather we are going to be holding it in other members workshops, the problem this time of yr is heating workshops,
once that warm weather appears then anyone that feels they have a workshop suitable, then feel free to say so,and indeed if you have a craft/skill you would like to share, then feel free to say so.

its straight up the 947 and a couple of miles past turriff
Runt

Thanks! As I've just moved here it'd be nice to meet some new people but alas I'm not sure I'd be able to make it. I really don't have much confidence trying to find my way around! I don't drive either!
Julie

I will do my best to get there circumstances permitting.
After we spoke the other day and you asked what I would be bringing, I thought about demonstrating navajo plying. It is a useful technique for plying a single thread into a three ply yarn and is great for people who only use a drop spindle or don't have many bobbins with their spinning wheel. If you like, I could bring my small sturdy wheel and show that too. It doesn't take long to show so it will fit in well with the folk art too.

thats a shame, we will have to find someone from that direction with a car, then you can share costs, if i here of anyone from that direction then ill put them on to you,
it is a fair way though, its 40 miles, but it is one main road the whole way.

Just exactly what Bracken says.

The only thing I'd add (as you say SH) is that it would be great to have  craft day/eve's in other areas, so more folk can skill share. I'd be happy to host one at some point, and/or travel to another area.
Smooth Hound

yes i was going to get to that, i thought id put this poll to see the interst for 7 days, and then i was thinking of doing a poll to see who can host etc great minds think alike, also if its in different places then it becomes closer for people that are too far from me sometimes, if you see what i mean, plus although i love doing it,   im sure there will be times i wont be able too, so im glad you bought that up

If you do want to go Runt and can get to Ellon Park and Ride (Stagecoach bus, either Peterhead or Fraserburgh) I could pick you up and take you through. I would obviously drop you back at the Park and Ride too so you can get home

Smooth Hound

sorry about the last two posts , i seem to of been on the wrong thread

anyway i just thought id update,
theres been no confirmation as to whether anyone is going to be demonstrate or show us anything, so if there are anyother ideas from anyone, as im not prepared to do it here without some confirmation on this , as it wont work, and everyone coming will be disappointed, so may be an idea to have a couple of things going on, so if anyone has anything they would like to show /demonstrate then feel free to say so,   and if so, please confirm that you will be coming
Maria

With luck I'll be there...I'll let you know soon. I'm also thinking about hosting soon...so umm...better go and check your thread about hosting.
Smooth Hound

no i meant people demonstrating or showing something, i didnt mean people just coming along,   the thing is is that everyone has to come a fairway, and if theres no confirmation that whoever is demonstrating , is definato going to be here or whereever , then it can make things difficult for whoevers hosting, they could for example be standing with 10 people and noone showing anything, leaving the host to have to make some rapid  problems to solve and have to improvise, then some people may not come again,

i was thinking that it might be an idea for us to have 2 people showing things a time, just in case one is unavoidably delayed or postponed.
but i will say this,
when im hosting, if i dont recieve confirmation that the person or hopefully persons, is definately/within reason coming, then i will assume they are not coming, and arrange things which may mean cancelling if i cant think of anyway of improvising, without wasting people who are coming along ways time.
also just so everyone understands   im not refering to people attending as guests/visitors here, as far as im concerned thats as it was, which is if you can make it your welcome, come anytime you please, take part in whatever the theme is of the evening, or bring your own stuff and do your own thing, or even just watch, drink t and have a chat. but we must get the bit about whos demonstrating sorted, thats all i mean

subjects

If folk are being a bit reticent about being a demonstrator perhaps just a 'crafty evening' would be better.
If everyone brought along something that they are working on like the last one that I came to (which should have been ragrug making) I think the evenings still have a lot to offer.
Even though there wasn't an 'expert' ragrug 'demonstrator' I think a good time was had by all and the crafts that people did bring along were very interesting and thought provoking. The wine bottle corks was just one example!!
Also, there is such a lot of 'how to' on the internet perhaps a subject could be chosen from the ether and attempted on the evening, with everyone bringing enough materials/resources to attempt it. Given enough advance warning I could get books from the library.
Going back to the ragrug evening - no-one was an expert but, by the end of the evening, everyone had had a go with the tools, books and materials supplied by 3 or 4 of us.
Smooth Hound

yes , your right, well well do that then, sounds good to me, then if anyone wants to come along and show us something, then just come along and do it,   yes i like that idea,    what does anyone else think about that
Julie

My appologies for not being there to demonstrate the rag rug technique, the best laid plans oft go awry.
We had no computer for several weeks over Christmas and new year, so I had no way of knowing it had been arranged until it was too late.
I wasn't well either, so couldn't have made it anyway.

I will host the natural dyes workshop and an expedition to look for materials in the summer when the weather is better. The dyeing will need a whole day so it will be on a weekend day. We can gather the plantstuffs we need in an afternoon or on a nice evening and make it into two separate days as the dyeing and mordanting will be time consuming. I have everything we need already - mordants, a range of dried dyestuffs, even acid dyes, but it would be nice to actually go for a collecting hunt to make the whole process feel more complete.
Only provisions will be; no kids and no outdoor footwear in the house.
Dale

Thats a good idea as somtimes I have to work late or somthing may come up like a airport run etc and I`d feel bad letting people down .
Smooth Hound

great  we have confirmation,   dale and julie are demonstrating this time,
many thanks, im looking forwar to this

so dales helping us with folk art, and julies doing, navajo plying,   im going to have to google that one havent got a clue what it is

its at my house this next time, which will be on the 4th of march, a wednesday, if anyone has a problem with the day, then we can talk about it, but that will need to be done rapidly, and if everyone involved keeps an eye on this thread, (best read it all, so not to miss anything. ) then that would be good,

im looking forward to this
glowingsunsets

I can't be there for obvious reasons lol, has anyone got a digi camera they could take so I could see the end results though please ?
wildgarlic

Yes, photos please folk, and if someone could do a write up of the evening that we can post on the site that would be great. Any volunteers? You don't need to be a wordy genius to do it.
Smooth Hound

if you dont need to be a wordy genius, then i could do it
glowingsunsets

Whoooo that great
wildgarlic

Nice one Smooth, thank you.
Julie

I will definitely be coming on Wednesday.

I have commitments on other days this week and next so don't take my demonstrating for granted if you have to change the day will you.

In fact, unless I confirm in writing on here, myself, don't anybody assume I am definitely able to be involved in any particular event please.
Smooth Hound

no, right its wednesday the 4th , i think we will fix that then
