Man knits nets for recycling vans

A worker, who sorts through rubbish put out for recycling, has turned his hobby of knitting nets into something to help his colleagues.

Richard Watkins, from Pontypool, has made nets to cover the recycling cages in Torfaen council vans.

They prevent clothes being blown out of lorries after roadside collection.

Mr Watkins says he has knitted six miles of nets in his lifetime. There are plans to bring out smaller nets for recycling boxes in the future.

What a star! I hope he gets a good bonus.

Here the council cut up old salmon nets to give to householders to use over black bags to stop the birds and cats opening them while awaiting collection.

My first time in Shetland I was wondering why everybody had these fish nets outside their houses...  I soon understood!

Some years ago I made nets on my knitting machine for the deep beds. Just about everyone who called asked where we got them from and remarked how unusual they were. Being made from cotton carpet warp, they rotted eventually which was a shame.
I put the chunky knitter on the loosest tension to make them and the net was a good size for keeping out cabbage whites and other such pests as well as stopping the local cats from using them as a toilet.
It would be a good way to use up synthetic knitting yarn oddments though as they wouldn't rot. Can you imagine a garden net that looked like Dr. Who's scarf

Now that's an idea! I think I still have a few odds and ends like that.

If you don't have a knitting machine you can do it by hand using a knotting technique. I have step by step instructions in a magazine which I could get Gordon to scan for you Ina.

Thanks - but no time at the moment anyway... But there might be others here who'd like to do it?
