Local flourDoes anyone know where I can buy flour from the Golspie Mill locally? I'm trying to buy everything local - or is there a nearer mill?

Not so sure about the Mill, perhaps one of the other members thats in aberdeenshire area will be able to give you pointers ( i'm down in Fife).
You can get a whole range of flours Organic & ordinary from the Neeps Food-Co-op, thats where I get mine

You could try The Green Grocer in Inverurie - I'm not sure whether she stocks it or not.
I did contact the Golspie Mill direct at one stage with a view to getting flour from them - I can't remember the cost but seem to recall that the delivery was quite high.
I'll look into it further as it would be good to offer this via the Neeps Food Co-op.

Yep, you can order it from them direct, (http://www.golspiemill.co.uk/forms/order.html) but postage is expensive.
I've been wondering, if we can source localish producers, would it be worth doing a round trip once every few months picking up bulk order from several different suppliers at once?
Stockist list is here:

Good idea Diana - I'm hoping to visit friends up north this summer so could do a trial run then!

Could go to Black Isle Brewery on way back too?
But seriously though, I don't think it would be too difficult to organise, but first off we'd need to draw up a list of suppliers.

Yes - always open to suggestions too if anyone has any recommendations.

As long as you made sure it could all be sold within the sell by date, the food co-op could bulk buy flour from a local mill perhaps? It does only have a six month shelf life after which, those minute crawlies hatch out. They won't hurt you if you do use the flour (bit of extra protein ) but you couldn't sell it on.

I think a potential problem might be the amount of cash that would have to be tied up in it.

Local mill doesn't necessarily mean local flour; a lot of smaller mills use imported grain.
I have the names of several Scottish (organic) farmers who grew wheat of baking quality last year; I intend to contact them (soonish - some time well before harvest!) to see if they would sell grain direct to the end consumer. If I can get some, I may have to invest in a proper grain mill (only have a hand mill at the moment).

That's a good idea Ina - any idea how much of an investment it would be and what sort of quantities can be milled at a time?

No idea - will have to find out.

I know this isn't local, but at least it's proof some farmers will sell:

Are these mills what you had in mind (I know it's not a UK retailer)

or these?

The Hawo mills are excellent - I think we had one of them at the co-op in Germany. Not cheap. In general, stonemills are much better. I have a small handmill (metal rather than stone) - only good for small quantities, though.
