Thanks Pete - we're still in the process of refurbishing - lots of hard work going on behind the scenes by the mods and admin - YAY

HUGE thanks go out to all the team.

It's sunny today - not sure for how long... I've just hung the washing out in the hope that it dries some before the next lot of rain.
essex_boy

Still have the annoying liitle adds though. They even appear int posts now.

They are not as bad as the ones on the last site and will be a thing of the past very soon - I'm going to pay for a years worth of no-ads.
pete_inthehills

Is it expensive?

Do you want a contribution? Or should I just buy you a pint if I ever meet you.

(which could be tomorrow night, be afraid, very afraid)

Adverts are fine if they keep to site going and free.

I don't like seeing them in peoples posts though.

Better if they have a post of there own if you have to have them.
I know you said you hope to get rid of them.
I don't mind the Google Adds as they tend to relate to what the thread is about and help keep a site going and give it funds to do other things.

Best if they are kept out of the thread and just around the top and bottom.
Even down one side can be tolerated, but when they are in the forum thread itself it does spoil the look and makes it look as if it is money, money, money!

Good luck with the new venture and fresh start
essex_boy

I would have to agree with you there BikeonBye top, bottom but not everywhere
wildgarlic

I've paid.... so shouldn't be too long now and we'll be ad free
russell

Good luck with these Forum changes Wildgarlic.

I hope you haven't had to pay much...

there's may be a good reason, but as you have your own neeps.co.uk domain, is there any reason you can't install phpBB there. That way you'd have full control over the database, ads and everything... and it wouldn't cost anything.

and wouldn't have to rely on server people who seem to have been giving you poor service.
wildgarlic

Thanks Russell

You also need the PHP knowhow to run your own...

Anyway - the last lot of server people were not very good - this lot - myfreeforum - are ACE! Definitely genuinely helpful and I have lots of confidence in them. We did our research well before making the choice.

You can have as many domain names as you like, it's the hosting that starts costing the money. Fine if you have your own server and fast internet link (and I mean quicker than a home ADSL line).

Problem with hosting is that they tend to "do you" on the bandwidth. In other words a personal site might not have a huge amount of traffic or data being pushed/pulled from it so wouldn't cost much extra if any over the std hosting package, whereas a busy forum with people uploading pics, etc will start to use a fair bit of bandwidth I would imagine.

Someone has to pay for it all, hence the reason there are a number of places like this that specialise in it (they already have the fast links and the server, easy enough to setup a number of different forums, websites on it).

You don't need to know much about php other than how to configure it to run the site on in the first place, once it's installed and working most forum software is similar enough to know your way about.

Are you pretty switched on with the php yourself Iain? Might just talk to you
IainC

Well I work in IT and have setup and run a forum internally in the office (runs on top of php rather than a php forum itself)... but most of these things are fairly similar enough to make educated guesses at

Why what do you want to know WG?

They are all easy to install but php is the one that takes a lot of configuring compared to EBLAH. I have a forum up if you want to take a look at it at www.houseofjohnson.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl It comes already with most of the mods that you would need to install on your own php forum.

Yeah, the one I setup at work was one of these http://www.simplemachines.org/ as I'd spoken to a couple of people who'd been dealing with forums for a while and it was one they recommended. Certainly setup easy enough (once the mysql and php were configured correctly) and does everything we need it to do at work.

Getting a decent host is very important.

One that I use offers 10GB monthly download for £35 a year... and has given great service and speed. Other hosts I use are very poor at service, and have been criticised regarding bandwidth problems.

simple machines has lots of fans and I like the look of its features, but I've enjoyed hacking about among phpBB files and I like what it does.

I'm no php wizard and knew next to none when I set up the GrampianLife Forum. You really could manage it all Wildgarlic.

Definitely.

Who do you use that give that amount of bandwidth for £35/year? Is that your only cost?

Yup, simple and easy to use. Only put it in place 'cos there are other guys there with less experience who need to be able to maintain it when I'm not there.

I see no reason how she couldn't either.
russell

http://www.tsohost.co.uk/

is a host I'd recommend... only possible hassle for some is that they're not a domain name registrar.
IainC

Have mates that run www.titaninternet.co.uk who are a domain registrar so you could combine the best of both

Microsoft use Titan for some of their hosting in this country which I guess is some kind of "validation" of their services.

Oy, what are you up to that I don't know about!
lonegranger

I just want to say that I really appreciate the new site. I have epilepsy and the flashing ads that used to appear on the other one sometimes just did not agree with me. This is fine for me. So once again thanks!!!

yeah, it was pretty good if a little chaotic.

So.... now we've got our shiney new forum, when are we getting a chat room?

pete
Sassinak

It would be a good idea and certainly something to talk about and consider
I've been on forums before that had them so it must be possible.
But is this the format of forum where thay can be built in ?
I don't know I'm a numpty
lor138

Phew...all that stuff before was giving me a headache...Domains, hostings, phpBB files??? I just switch mine on and hope it connects to the internet - if not the OH gets shouted through to help!!!! Well...we can't be good at everything, can we??!!!

Only issue with a chat room I'd say is that you may tend to lose some of the "conversation" that happens on the threads.
Sassinak

Yes that would be sad.
It is nice having a record of all the snippets of useful stuff that get mentioned. We would lose that
