Landy won't start but will buzzAny ideas guys?
Got a problem with the Defender 300 TDi. When I try and start her up, the dash lights come on dimly (but not the warming up/coil light), but when I turn the key to start, all I get is a buzzing from the are of the fuse/relay box. Any of the switched (headlights, indicators etc) also produce the same buzzing when the ignition is on.
It was fine Friday morning when I moved it, but when OH went to use it 20mins later, that's when the fault occurred. I blame him, it was the mower he broke last time I was away
Any idea where to start a diagnostic?

Sounds a bit like battery or earths to me. My old disco was the same when sat for a while, but chuck a set of jumper cables on it and it'd start fairly quickly.

Thanks Iain, I was thinking earth fault - the battery seems fine.
Where do I start tracing an earth fault?

Most of the initial earth faults will be at the points where the battery negative attaches to the body/engine and the same with the starter.
It may be worth undoing the leads from these points and check for corrosion etc, clean them up and re-attach to get a good connection.

Thanks for the replies.
Did all the checks and came to the conclusion it was the battery (metered fine at 12.5V, but drained as soon as a draw was put on it) and it was only a car sized one.
I now have a tractor battery on it.

thatll sort it,
the meter should go up from 12 v to about 13.5/14v when engine is running,
