jerry can

Just purchased a duel fuel camp cooker..yes doing a bit of camping...I need to get a jerry can to carry the fuel.

What would be better a plastic one or metal?
Smooth Hound

plastics lighter, and cheaper
baldowrie

yeah but is it best for carrying the boot of a car over long distances in hot weather?
Smooth Hound

you may be better buying a couple of the 1 gallon cans instead, its a lot easier for lifting, filling etc.
baldowrie

 how many litres is that?
Smooth Hound

5 litres to a can, but your better off with 4 , unless you want to spill it and stink of petrol, or parrafin, im not certain what your heater does

It's a duel fuel cooker I picked up for a bargain price today at £25 off it!

Been doing a bit of reading and some say plastic is ok whilst others say, as I have seen, they can 'blow out' with the heat which is something we don't want in the back of the car.

I am looking at a 5ltr metal and have asked the seller, yep fleabay, what weight it would be full.

by the way wouldn't even consider a 20ltr one....that would be nearly half my height for start!
Smooth Hound

where are you going lol, the sahara, ive never had a problem with plastic ones, but each to there own,
baldowrie

France next year, but practice run in Scotland this year
Smooth Hound

sounds good ,

You must be particularly short then... I've a 20l jerry can, and while it can be a bit on the heavy side when completely full... I wouldn't say it's particularly tall

Although, I also have a sneaking suspicion that you are only allowed to carry 10l in a container at any one time in a car? Saying that no-ones ever said anything whenever I've filled it up.

We've both types... got two small plastic 5l ones and the 20l metal one. Metal one is obviously more sturdy, but both the plastic ones, have in the past, been stuck accidentally on the worktop in the garage, which has a south facing window and it was during the height of summer (ie very sunny... not the usual wet summer ) and neither of them exploded, so TBH, I doubt you will have an issue regardless of which you go for.

I do recall seeing some 10l (I think) metal jerry cans though, which might be a nice in between size.

I would put some thought into how you are carrying/stowing them though. Ideally you want to be able to put it in the boot and strap it down to avoid it moving about the place, 'cos 10 or 20l of fuel is heavy enough to mangle other stuff in your boot if it's able to shift about too much.

Metal every time. Just be careful opening them after they've been left a while as they seal shut, rather than vent. This does mean you don't lose half the contents through evapouration, nor do you have them bulging out like plastic ones do. Their shape makes them much easier to store and stack as well, if you really needed to do so.
