Japanese quails - free to a good home

Would anyone like 2 x 1-day old Japanese quails? Free to a good home

hi, can you keep quails and chickens together, i have a 10 ft by 4ft roofed run and house, with a few chickens, which i intend on reducing to just 3 or 4 chickens, and if it was o id ut a coule of quails in with them

I suspect it might be ok to keep the two types together.  I'm sure others will correct if I am mistaken.  I have read about a broody bantam hatching and rearing quail.  You would certainly need a roof and rodent-proof wire because they are already starting to 'hover'.

i have a good run and house, maybe i could call round and see how to keep them properly first, i would probably keep them seperate fom the chickens for now till they can fly though,

Are the Japanese quail the really tiny ones?

If so they are the sort that I hatched many years ago. They are adorable about the same size and shape as a bumble bee - but much, much faster lol

I had to build a special brooder because they popped out through ordinary mesh and were really difficult to catch again. They appear to have vertical take off

From what I've read quail are too small to keep with chickens, they are also at risk from rats as well as foxes etc. The water needs to be in a shallow bowl with pebbles in it as they are so small when babies they can drown themselves.

We would be interested if the are still available.

mmm, ill have a read up about it,

Japanese are usually larger than the Chinese painted and quail and chickens don't mix.  They need to be in a cage made from aviary mesh so they are completely safe from all predators,

I am busy making one myself - I am picking up some chinese later today

OOOh, where are you getting yours from, and do they have japs.
We have struggled to get some, although we have 5 females on order, it could be a few months before we get them.

I have just picked up 8 chinese painted quail.  The chap who has the fishing tackle shop in Cullen breeds them.  They are still in a box as I still have the small door to put on the aviary
