, but on Friday I was tinkering about out with some dowel and wood scraps, and made a new bobbin for our spinning wheel...

This image makes it look a bit larger than the original, but actually it's the same size.

Here it is on the, err, thing it goes on to...

There are a few rough edges, and the ends aren't perfectly centred, but it seems to fit and turn OK.

I might get a chance to try it out in the next day or so, and maybe work on an improved version. If I can get a couple of good ones, my next project is a lazy kate.

Thanks all, I'll let you know how it works.

I have a feeling that the slightly off centre spool end bit might cause a problem when spinning because the brake will work inconsistently, but we'll see.

This one took about half an hour, and when I do the next one I'll figure out a way to route the brake groove concentrically to the spindle. I think I know how I'll do it - I just need to throw together a jig for the router.

The 'erm thing it goes on' is a flyer (were you joking?). I only know because I've collected a couple of spinning books along the way and have been a good student...on and off

. One of them gives instructions on how to build the whole shabang....if making the lazy kate goes as well as the bobbin...you might fancy it.

Let me know if you need some reading material. Marhar will be happy to know they are being well used. Oh, speaking of Marhar....really must ask WG if a day for a crafty Marhar meet has been set. Will you be able to make it Welly/s? Marhar has crafted a few wheels - the lil' one he brought last time (pirwee??) was beautiful.
