Huntly Organic Box SchemeHi I'm a new neepster and have just moved to Huntly, I was wondering if anyone gets a local organic box delivered in the Huntly area and if so who do you use?
Thanks for the help

Welcome aboard Angie
I'm not sure about the Huntly area but we've got some other Neepsters in that area so hopefully they'll offer up some suggestions.

We used to use one organised by the green grocer in Inverurie and we live close to Huntly.
You might phone them and see if they still do it.

It's the Huntly Farmers' Market tomorrow morning - in the square. Might be some producers there that will give info on any box schemes.

I remember calling around (a lot) when we first moved here. The only local lead I had was for someone who had stopped producing boxes as they'd lost their poly in high winds. Closest boxed veg as far as I can gather is Turriff, Inverurie, or Earthshare Elgin.
If you hear anything please let us all know.
For the future - there may be something closer in time to come from Bonnyton Gardens in the Old Rayne/Insch area. They are a new community garden, offering boxed veg.

We had veggie buckets a couple of years ago from Gartly - a fab idea but I'm not sure whether they will do it again. They'll probably be at the Farmers' Market - might get up there tomorrow actually - anyone going?

I'm pretty sure VitalVeg don't deliver that far, but they may know somebody who does that area. If I remember, I'll ask them on Monday.

huntly herbs (gartly) stopped doing veg boxes years ago but it would still be worth asking at their stall since they know all the local producers so would be able to tell you.

Pretty sure these are the folk I contacted when I arrived, and said they'd lost their poly. I may be wrong as they said they would take their name off the soil association site. Would be great if they were up and running again.

I think it may be the same folk as I emailed to see if they were still going but she said they gave up 18 months ago.

Give us a chance!
They don't deliver that far; but Wendy said she knows somebody who's just starting in that area. Didn't have the details on her, though.
Maybe if you pm Annepan01 and ask?

Yep done both those things SH. Vitalveg is the one that Ina is going to ask - it's in midmar(?) so a bit far to deliver to Huntly (not very perma ) and the soil association site comes up with the folks who are no longer running the box veg around here.
Gap in the market? Anyone wanna help me fill it? Would love to supply veggies for folks.
As i mentioned before Bonnyton Gardens are looking for folk to help them get up and running as a community veg scheme. But again, its a bit far from Huntly - but be wonderful if nothing closer. Beat buying in the supermarket and getting non seasonal veg flown across the globe. They had a marvellous nettle recipe on the last newsletter i was sent. Let me know if you want to find out more about this project. They've just had a tattie planting day that I couldn't make

Was thinking that myself Maria - but I'm a bit far from you too. Got ground here that we could use but we can't afford a poly. Been thinking about the community garden side of things for here too.

New veg box scheme in HuntlyHi, This is Lesley Richards and I'm currently setting up a veg box scheme in and around Huntly shortly. I don't have a web site yet (veg come first!) but I can be contacted at HuntlyHarvest@aol.com or call me on 01542 870201. Although I will be growing veg to 'organic standards', I can't label my veg as 'organic' but they are home grown, chemical and pesticide free and will grow in their own sweet time. Still in 'set up' mode, but hope to have a 'salad box' available by last week in May and Veg boxes sometime in June. Please call for details and please bear in mind that I will be 'out on the veg plots' most of the day so leave a message and I'll get back to you.. thanks, Lesley

Veg BoxesWe'd be interested in one too (Insch), we're too far out for Vital Veg. It would be for before our veggies are ready and when I can't keep them going any longer. (I know it's possible but due to my short comings unless I manage to crack it this year.)

Great news - What area will you be covering?

Hi, I'll be supplying to Huntly and surrounding areas - want to keep food miles as low as possible! Already have a waiting list of people interested in receiving a weekly box of veg (so hoping the veg will grow well!) so if anyone is interested then they should contact me at HuntlyHarvest@aol.com
Thanks

It's great to know there will be a box scheme in Huntly. In the short term (and I'm sure people have already thought of this) you can get boxes delivered to your work if you're in an area that's covered. We get Vital Veg delivered to my partner's work at Blackburn as they don't deliver out this far.

We tried that from somewhere - erm...could have been 'food for thought' or something very similar. We tried a couple of times but found much of the bag was imported...unless 'local produce' means oranges and bananna's ect. I know many veg schemes add these things to supply a wider service to customers...but what i really wanted was seasonal local fruit and veg. I guess in hindsight i could have tried chatting to the growers and seeing if the bag/box could have been changed to suit. Hindsight's great after the event.
Since then I've done what i can to grow in the garden. I'm getting there...and hope next year I'll manage a year of seasonal veg from the garden.

Huntly Harvest UpdateHello All
Just to let you know that rather than doing an independent Veg Box Scheme, all my vegetables will be available for purchase at the Ashgrove Garden Centre in the near future. I'm hoping to take the first 'offerings' there on Friday (3rd July) which will consist of red/white onions, some beetroot, courgettes (Soleil -yellow) and broad beans. June has been very cold and wet up until the last week which means crops are later than usual and along with a few 'gardening disasters', some crops have had to be started from scratch again, so please bear with us. Some crops will be later than normal (peas/mangetout) and all crops will be dependant on the weather - which is always unpredictable up here! Thankfully we have a poly tunnel which is now bursting at the seems with young plants and seedlings waiting to get planted out. The last week of 'Bahamas' type weather has helped some crops along but it has also meant that some crops in the poly tunnel (at 46 degrees today!) have bolted and will need to be re-sown -lettuce in particular.
As far as the veg box scheme goes, The Ashgrove are happy to act as a collection/drop off point if the scheme goes ahead, we really will have to see how the crops perform this year. There will be a stand at the Ashgrove Garden Centre for the veg and alongside it will be the usual sheets of information relating to the veg on sale - ie, recipes, how to store the veg etc (as would have appeared in the veg box scheme).
If you would like to know in advance what will be delivered and when then just drop me an email and I can keep you informed. Otherwise, why not just pop in on your way past and see what's there and have a browse around the shop for other items of interest. If there is a particular veg that you are wanting (and it's available), I'm more than happy to make sure it will be at the garden centre (and put aside for you if necessary) if you can give me 48hrs notice (via email) of when you require it.
If you would like to phone the garden centre direct, please call 01466 760223 and ask for Rhona. Update- Rhona has had a wee accident and is currently on crutches, but there will be someone else in the garden centre who can help out.
We really hope you enjoy eating the veg as much as we enjoy growing it. We don't use chemicals or pesticides (one of the reasons our crops will be delayed this year!) and take great pleasure knowing that we are doing our bit towards reducing 'food miles' and helping with climate change, let alone knowing we are not consuming dangerous toxins that are potentially harmful to people.
What's coming next? well, peppers (bell) are growing nicely, potatoes should be ready in the next few weeks, spring onions, pak choi, radish, lettuce, maybe some baby carrots.....
If you have any feedback on the vegetables, we'd love to hear it.
Kind regards
Lesley Richards

Veg box Scheme in Huntly Area for 2010Hi,
Just to let you know that as from June 2010 i WILL be doing a local veg box scheme in the Huntly area for those interested. This year has been a bit difficult with setting up the growing area (flooding/drainage!), but now I'm ready for a proper start to 2010. Currently, I only have enough veg to support existing customers over the next few months but I will be able to to supply more customers next summer onwards for locally grown veg, grown with no chemicals and no pesticides... (no brought in veg/fruit either). If you are interested in joining the scheme, please email me at huntlyharvest@aol.com or call me on 01542 870201 (not often indoors to hear the phone though, but please leave a message with contact details and I'll get back to you).
Here's to a good growing season next year!!

Here's to a good growing season for 2010

the growing season was awful for my veg box supplier too, down in Ballater area, they had to have 2 week suspension at one stage because they couldnt be happy with the quality (they are very selective, all the stuff is gorgeous). It was a real struggle for them.
Hopefully 2010 will be great growing weather!

The season was awful - I won't forget in a hurry how I got my wellies stuck in the mud while weeding carrots... And the tractor got bogged down planting leeks, and and and - went on like that all season! It's a miracle the veg turned out as well as it did, really!
