How to stop sciarid flies on indoor plants

We've got loads of these flies - a real pain in the posterior. Has anyone got any good and quick ways of getting rid of them? They run all over the soil and fly.

also i read somewhere that a top dressing of gravel over the effected area can work

I have gravel on my plants but still get a few bugs. Try getting a carnivorous plant, apparently they are great at controlling them.

They are quite difficult beasties to squash too. You catch one and think you've squished it but when you open your hand the wee devil flies away!!

carniverous plants is something i know nothing about, except the native sundew and butterwort, but indoor ones i mean,
which sort are easy to grow. it would be great to watch

i think midgeys are the one thing that stands against tourism in scotland, we are lucky over here, i remember one time on the west coast putting a tent up, by the time i had finished at double speed i had been eaten alive, thousands , maybe millions of bites,   my face was red and unrecognisable, i had a really rotten time

there is one thing that deters them though, once i was over there and i broke down, and by the time i had finished fixing it, i was covered in oil face, hands arms the lot, and one thing i noticed was that every one else was being eaten alive, except me   because i was covered in oil, so if it all gets too much, then thats my recommendation, get your dip stick, rubbit on your hands, and your face.

Saracenia's(pitcher plants) are supposed to be good at controlling sciarid flies. A person i know on a gardening forum swears by them!

I have to cover up in the garden in the evening cos of the bloomin midgies, they always get into my hair and bite me noggin
