Horse "torture"

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8089847.stm

I really don't get why people have animals, and then fail to look after them. Even if you suddenly got into trouble and didn't have the cash to feed them, then you try and sell them (or worst case give them away) rather than let them starve to death surely?

I don't think I'll ever really understand "people"...
Smooth Hound

me neither
lachlanandmarcus

Agree. Im afraid the owners explanations in the P&J today didnt hold water either, horses dont starve to death by 'other horses bulllying them' and if they are being bullied then they must be separated.

It made me very cross.

What is wrong with people today ???!!!
Smooth Hound

there seems to be two different types, the real barbaric heartless ones, and then theres the ones that try and hide that they are struggling, whether thats pride or what i dont know but still not good best they just say something at an earlier stage, so that the animals fecieve the help they need,

I would take them out and shoot them - the owners that is.  There is no excuse financial, ignorance or otherwise.  How can anyone do that?  Was on local radio that it was at New Deer, hopefully it's one and not two?
IainC

Yeah, was at New Deer... (assuming you meant one incident not two... 'cos there were a dozen dead horses and something like 25 emaciated living ones IIRC).

Yes, I meant incident.  Sorry, tired and emotional last night

And I starve myself before I would let my horses, or any of my animals, do so.

Quite understand about last night.

Dunno if I'd starve myself before animals, but I couldn't see an animal suffering, and like I said, would offer them away for free before I'd let them get into a state like those ones.

Perhaps you don't have the poundage to lose like I do
But you are totally right about giving them away, we have two "for life" rescue shetlands we got due to similar reasons.
IainC

Hmmm... dunno about that... just lucky to be tall enough to hide it a bit...

It's one thing to be aware enough to starve something to "punish" it (which still isn't right), but who on earth could watch stuff starve, etc without getting worried and trying to help somehow?

I can't see anyone being stupid enough to not see the problems as they are happening (even Stoneys woman who didn't realise pigs had to die to get the pork would have fed them or cared for them better )

I was completely shocked by this story. How? Why? Words completely fail me (and that's not often!)

Having read the full account on line, where it gives names and addresses, it turns out that I have met the woman in question a few times. we used to borrow her trailer when the kids were showing ponies. She always seemed quite caring and fond of her animals.
Like all of you I am horrified and disgusted that anyone could allow animals to get into this state.
To leave emotional issues aside and be mercenary. Those horses would have cost, and would be worth, quite a lot of money. It seems insane to let your investments die for lack of a bit of care and attention. If money is an issue thn surely you sell a couple to enable you to buy food for the rest.
If the horses were honestly dying bvecause they were bullied by the others (Find it extremely difficult to believe) then surely there is something drastically wrong with your management for it to happen more than once. It still amounts to neglect of the most shameful kind
