Hello Jonny Barton to Neeps.
Woo-hoo another Permaculture fan has landed. There's already a question here somewhere that you might be able to help with oh' designerly one?
James B has asked which nut trees are the most successful to plant in Scotland? Can't for a minute remember where the thread is - or feel confident enough to answer his question for that matter .
Hope you'll find many a likeminded (& local ) soul here.

Hello Maria.
This NEEPS forum looks fun with all these people locally connected.
for your question I would firstly point him to the helpful and knowledgeable nut experts at Devon's A.R.T.
(Agroforestry Reseach Trust)
Email: mail@agroforestry.co.uk
Telephone & fax: +44 (0)1803 840776
Mail: A.R.T., 46 Hunters Moon, Dartington, Totnes, TQ9 6JT, UK
I got trees and advice from there for nut production and it is important to get the right variety for the right location he intends to plant into. So I won't recommend same varieties as mine without checking out first.
Also he (and you ) may be interested in fruit trees and info on them so.....

If he is growing hazels simply for fuel then growing wild hazels will do best (From the helpful and knowledgeable Bob Davis at FTN, the Forvie Tree Nursery near Ellon, 01358 711292), but it sounds like he wants nuts.
And Maria I wonder if you can help me find a supplier of local organic straw in either round or small bale form. It's for the house which looks like the warrant will come imminently...Fingers crossed.

hazelsthanks,
I've already got quite a few hazels from Bob since he is only 2 miles from us. As you said, these are for shelter and fuel. If I want nuts then it looks like I'l need a different variety.
