Hello Biggporgy

Welcome to NEEPS!

I see you are an environment consultant - now how did you know I need somebody like you just now...

OK, it's probably the wrong question to ask - but I've just been on to the council to ask whether I could recycle old paperbacks (damaged ones!) through the paper recycling. Seems I can't, even if I take the covers off. Any idea why? They take phone books and brochures, and some stuff that's classed as "brochures" is just as solid as paperbacks...

Book recycling

Hi Ina,  I do happen to know a bit about this as I was Head of service at the Council responsible for setting up much ( but not all -as I do not agree with some of the recent changes) of the existing recycling systems.

Basically, the Coucnil recycle nothing...! yes they do a little but generally not much of the household waste.  What they do is to 'collecvt' materials and pass them on to people who actually do the recycling.  In this respect they are in the hands of the people who take the materials about what can and cannot be accepted.  I was unaware of the books issue but was aware of the change about directories.

anyway.  Have you considered Books Abroad at Rhynie who do what is says on the tin.  After all reusing the book is much better than recycling it
I am still getting used to online Forums ..so bear with me for a bit.

you certainly were on the ball to get your question in early  and it just occurs to me that you did not say which Council and neither did I   Most Councils have different systems   There are 32 Councils in Scotland operating 57 ( Heinz varieties) at the last count.

A good info site to use is SWAG  Scottish waste aware Group  and their Waste Aware site.  Hope this helps.  Come back if you want more and by phone might be easier and quicker with my typing speed

I didn't know about them - but I think even they wouldn't be interested in some of the cr*p (pages missing etc) I have to get rid off... Shows you how little I like to dump books that I still have them at all! I will keep them in mind though if I do find something that's worth rescuing.

Aberdeenshire council. Although I live on the border to Angus and use their sites just as much as the Aberdeenshire ones.
And thanks for reminding me about SWAG - I knew about them, but had forgotten!

Cheers

Welcome

Ohhh no! To be honest I don't know, though any of the moderators will and there's always someone about here. If I'm not sure of something, I post it then view and if worse than the spelling, like in yours     I just edit, it will say you've edited, forgot the comment but I say, edited for numptie reasons.

P.s. big intros are fab, gets the conversation going and everyone gathers like hens for a chat

Basically here! The "say hello" goes both ways - for you to say hello to us and tell us about yourself, and for us to welcome you. Unfortunately a lot of newbies don't want to post anything about themselves... I always find it better if I know a bit about the person I'm "talking" to.

Hi and    from me too

Look forward to meeting you around the forum
Biggporgy

Welcome

Hi All thanks for the welcomes,

a bit about me...semi retired former local authority environmental health and waste managment nerd. The semi bit is because I have a small consultancy on those subjects to keep my brain alive and me out of the wayof 'her indoors'
Still involved professionallyespecially in Waste Management as a strategic policy adviser.  Interested in most environmental type issues and am a member of Aberdeenshire Environmental  Forum where I lead on their 'Adopt-a-Street' scheme called ALi - Aberdeenshire Litter Initiative.
The link to the AEF website is www.green-butterfly.org.uk and you can find me there if you are interested in the free litter picking stick and hi viz vest.  I suspect that most folks on this site will pick litter around their home form time to time..old fashioned civic pride on the lines of Do a little Change a Lot
Anyway, enough about me.  I hope that I can be of assistance to some and look forward to gaining information back.  I have an inkling to start beekeeping and have already noticed some good info on the site.  That is perhaps a winter project to get up to speed on the implications costs etc

Years ago, in fact several decades ago, I used to help a local beekeeper collect swarms of bees that had been reported to the Council.
