Hares on the increase

Quote:
Farms with wildlife-friendly schemes have helped numbers of brown hares increase by more than a third, the Wildlife Trusts have said.

The hares have suffered declines in numbers of 75% in the past 50 years, the Trusts say.

On 60 farms taking part in the scheme, numbers have increased by 35% from 167 last year to 225 this year.

Farmers are leaving wide grass margins in arable fields where the grass grows long to provide shelter.

Hare numbers had fallen due to by the conversion of grassland to arable farming, changes to planting regimes and reductions in different habitats in the countryside.

I'm not sure whether this system is in place in Scotland or not, but I've seen many more hares over the last 12 months than I've ever seen. Had one bounding around in the field at the back this morning.

We saw our first one of the year too, there are loads here, have seen up to 15 at one time, probably because we manage the land so 'badly' (ie inefficient for any useful purpose but fab for hares and lapwings and stuff, think Im happy with bad management on that score).

I nearly ran over two last night.  They were running between fields across our small lane.

I think spring fever had caught them.
