Growing vegCan you buy containers to grow veg in? I would like to start growing veg with my youngest two and thought about starting in containers.

containersold fish boxes are a good, cheap (maybe even free) starter container for growing veg if you can get hold of some. The bottoms have already got holes in and they are a decent size and depth for any kind of veg. You can even clad them in wood if you don't like looking at white/blue/red plastic!!!!

What kind of veg do you fancy growing? You can recycle all sorts of things for salady stuff...chopping the top off plastic juice/milk bottles would get you started.
Perhaps you could put a 'wanted' on the emporium in case anyone has anything suitable?

Cut in half (length ways) plastic pipe or guttering is ideal for growing shallow crops such as salad leaves etc.
I recycle the soup containers from a local deli (5 litre) and grow dwarf beans in them, strawberries etc. Also recycle the olive trays (about 15 inches by 9inches) and use them for growing fom seed. You could always ask at your local deli and see if they'll keep for you.
Tatties grow in cattle molasses buckets (BIG) which we recycle from fields.
Individual herbs get grown in big yoghurt pots etc.
Other than that yes, most good garden centres offer 'kits' for growing veg/strawbs.

another way of growing spuds is in old compost bags rolled down and as they grow unroll and add more soil, just shout if you want any use about 100 a day at work so plenty going spare will have a look around see if any old cotainer lying around that might be of use
that goes for anyone just shout if you want empty compost bags also great for cutting open and planting through to save weeding or just using as sturdy rubbish bags

You can use old baths, that's what were doing this year. Old tyres are also an option, stacked on top of each other, you can make them as tall as needed, and most car places are happy to let you have some, it saves them having to dispose of them.

I use old pallets lined with plastic (either recycled bags or weed membrane) and grow in them, can be sourced by asking at local big stores like DIY sheds.
