growing mushrooms

does anyone have any knowledge , tips or anything, what are ther needs,
pete_inthehills

I've got two boxes of mushrooms growing in my polytunnel.  It just consists of some mushroom compost with the fungal mycelium growing in it and then on top of that there is a layer of soil.  The actual mushrooms that we eat are the "fruits" of this white mycelium.  They push through the soil.

I got my boxes as presents, but when I first moved up here I bought some mushroom compost from foxlea garden centre (I'm not sure if its still there) and put that in a box and covered it with soil and had the same effect.  It was much cheaper as a big bag of mushroom compost was the same price as one of my little boxes.  Admittedly they were selling it as compost not to grow mushrooms with, but it did a good job.

I'll post some photos if I remember.

Is there still a big mushroom farm just beside the lane to the beach at Balmedie?
We once used bags of spent mushroom compost to floor an aviary and had a splendid crop for weeks

Managed to grow 3 (in words: three) mushrooms in several attempts... Don't know why it never worked for me. I think I should try and get some mushroom compost - that sounds like a good idea, at least you still have decent compost if the mushrooms don't grow! If anybody finds out where it's still available, could you please let us know?

ta, just done a search, on them, and on one forum they are saying that they are 5 pounds odd, and that if you empty the contents into an electric propergator, then they do much better.

Oooooh I wonder, if they like propagators, then would they like a warm greenhouse, subject to fluctuations, not heated.

I wonder how many you get, if they keep on coming that would be fab.

i would think it may dry quick in the g house, unless maybe you made a lid for it to keep the moisture in, mind you take no notice of me   i havent got a clue, just done a bit of reading on other forums about it, it could be completely wrong

I think when they grow them commercially they are kept in the dark - but don't take my word for it lol
