green roof

I was just listening to an article about a bloke who put a green roof on his garden shed.

Basically, he strengthed the roof and uprights on his normal 6ftx6ft garden shed and then put a rim around the top to make a shallow box.  He then used pond liner to make it water proof.  He then filled the top with gravel and soil and planted alpines.

It sounds nice, although I think it'd dry out in the summer and flood in the winter.

It'll be interesting to see what comes of this.

There is a house underneath the Forth Rail Bridge (North Queensferry end) that has a grass roof... you can see it when your on the train and look down

The first green roofs I saw was about 30 years ago, on a Steiner school in Germany. They are supposed to be very good insulation! You need to make sure they are well drained, to avoid the flooding problem, and choose plants that can cope with the dry, shallow soil.

Hence why alpines are mostly used. House leeks work well too.

now that I think of it, I'm sure the RSPB head quarters have a grass roof.  I think a couple of other bird reserves also had grass roofs.

they have done it on gardener world prog on a wee seed  to show 'anyone can do it'.
They used mostly light and well drainage 'soil' and mostly small mediterian plants and alpines

Where abouts? I am due to go there in August and it would be interesting to see it

I'm not sure that its a house, I think its the aquarium/sea live centre under the bridge.

I could be wrong though.

sorry I missed this post Baldowrie...

If you drive down through NQ high st and take the left hand turn just before the pub (think its called the albert) and drive along that road, there is a wee car park at the foot of the first column of the bridge.

There are houses at the top of the hill there and that's where the grass roofed building is, I think it is white from memory.

Hope this helps

Even better... found this link regarding it...

i am in the process of building a willow round house, of which i intend on using sedum on the roof, ive grown all the sedum in pots, im thinkining about a sedum roofed willow potting shed as well, ive got photos although theres not much to look at yet, just marked it out, but ive got all the stuff i need now, so this winter i shall start to keep a log, i recon itll take about 3 yrs all in all.

ah right I don't go that far as I take another left up to the communtiy centre, but we may if we have time just drive that way in a couple of weeks time.

That not a hill most would want to take in an ordinary car on wet day!
