Gooseberry ProblemI know I shouldn't complain about the weather, but I am
Picked the first of the ripening gooseberries on Sunday. Went down today to see if more are ripe and the rain has played havoc with them. It is a really heavy crop and the rain has swollen them rapidly resulting in many, many split berries.
I have picked quite a lot of the ones that are not too badly split and wonder if they would be ok for wine if I put a Campden tablet in to kill any bugs that might be there. They can only have been split for a day or so, certainly no time to start fermenting or rotting. What do people think? Do I risk it or do I throw away almost a quarter of my crop
It has also broken a few branches off as a result of the weight - see picture for an average branch

Go for the wine, don't throw out the crop! Or make jam! Like you said, they wont have had time to go off yet! They look lovely!

Well I picked another 7 pounds of gooseberries yesterday. Plus another 2lb that I've frozen for the wine collection. There are probably still as many again that aren't qute ripe yet. Wonderful year lol
