Sad day today... we had to dispatch Gloria this morning :-(

I check all my chooks before they go to bed and also first thing in the morning, they were all ok last night, but when I checked the black pekins this morning Gloria had no feathers on her lower back and covered in blood... on closer inspection her parsons nose was half hanging off and had a big gaping hole just to the side of it.

I took Gloria up to my new summer house and sat with her until my OH came home, he agreed that no amount of stitching and antibiotics and purple sprays would mend the damage done to poor Gloria.

You know when you just want to sit in a heap on the floor and burst into tears...well that was me this morning .... how can best pal chickens be so brutal.

oh Townie...am so sorry....i had lost all my ones that were 'pal's and have decided never to make them pals again...as its heartbreaking when things happen and always to the favorite chickens, never the nasty ones

do what you need to ...if you need to sit on a floor and have a good cry...do it...

Oh no poor Gloria, and poor you
Are you sure that you haven't had a stoat, weasel or rat in the run?
Chickens don't often cause so much damage on a first attack, it usually starts in a fairly small way and escalates.

The pekins coop is up off the ground on a framework Sass and is built like a bomb shelter, there is little chance of something getting in there, plus I'm cleaning them out twice a week so would have noticed if something was wrong with the coop

Never easy to say goodbye. We lost our first Chicken Greta the other week.
I swear I was down in the dumps for two whole days. Had very tearful journeys to and from work (my thinking time).
