Gabions

Has anyone got experience of using gabion baskets for making retaining walls?

well not really but I did look into it for repairing a river crossing at our previous house, in the end I used concrete pipes (since they were freely available) and filled those with sand and gravel instead.
However, my initial solution using gabions would of worked fine, I had got as far as working out how many I wanted and the spec of the stone to fill them. It was going to be quite expensive hence the alternative option.

I have plenty of stone (the remains of the steading) so it is more a case of how expernsive are the baskets and how difficult is it to get them right.
