Foul Brood info - please read

If you have bees, please have a look at this leaflet:

https://secure.csl.gov.uk/beebase/pdfs/fbleaflet.pdf

European Foul Brood is quite widespread now from Inverness, down to Perth and into Fife and everywhere East of that line. It is treatable if you catch it early, so please make yourself familiar with it, and don't be afraid to ask for help.

There is also a fair amount of American Foul Brood about, which we really have to try and stop.

This year also seems quite bad for Sac Brood (often mistaken for one of the foul broods) and chalk brood. If you do find something that doesn't look quite right please get someone to have a look.

As a general point, it's a good idea at this time to:
Check bees for disease when you're not doing anything else to the hive (so you can concentrate on that rather than worrying about "where's the Queen" etc).
Do wash your gloves (or used disposable ones on top of your regulars) between visits to apiaries (especially if visiting an area with known cases).
Do clean your hive tools and equipment (either blowtorch or with a soda crystal solution).
Don't accept/buy hives, bees or equipment from beekeepers you don't know. I heard of someone last night who was sold supers by one of the commercial guys who has a lot of FB.
Do let others know what's happening with your bees. We all like to know how others' bees are doing - good and bad - and we will help if we can.
Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice.

Sorry for the long post, but this is important (to those who have or want bees).
