Fluoride

I've just been to the dentist with the children and we were talking about fluoride in toothpaste - J uses a fluoride-free toothpaste from Weleda which the dentist pretty much said wasn't good enough for children (J was born with a cleft lip and palate and therefore his teeth are prone to decay) - and that to use a toothpaste without fluoride was a bit of a waste of time and that you may just as well brush with water.

Now... she did say that she would be interested in seeing the claims made by Weleda (or any other toothpaste manufacturer for that matter) about how they prevent tooth decay as only fluoride will prevent decay (her words). She also said that conventional toothpaste for children doesn't contain anywhere near enough fluoride in them for our non-fluoridated water and that we should use an adult toothpaste for our children.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on fluoride and natural tooth pastes.

B*@%$*ks, frankly. Flouride doesn't prevent tooth decay any more than say, carbon fibre would.
Flouride is actually a waste product from some industrial process or other - I can't remember which one - and can't legally be dumped straight into waterways. It can be added to drinking water though. And toothpaste. And you know what? There's enough flouride in the average tube of toothpaste to kill a small child - which is why there are those warnings on it...

I don't know much about fluoride, but I do know that it is dangerous for kids to sit and eat a whole tubeMy dentist told me never to allow my children to use adult toothpaste on their baby teeth as it is too abrasive for them, and would wear them down quicker.

I used to live in the same village as man we called "Mr Flouride" He had letters in the paper every week with what looked , to me, like good scientific evidence that flouride was very bad for you. It locks on to some vital element (I will see if I still have any of his references) and can lead to suicidal tendencies and all sorts of mental and physical problems. Trouble is, that like most crusaders, he took it to the far end of a f*** and tried to blame it for virtually all the ills of mankind.
He then decided that adding it to the water supply was a plot by the government to subdue the people by depressing their natural interest in life......... .blah, blah, blah.....
I must admit that some of his preaching must have had an effect because I do avoid flouride now lol

Found this today while looking for info on pfeiffer's

Selenium deficiency has been found to be associated with muscle weakness and muscular dystrophy. Swelling, internal haemorrhages, atrophy of the pancreas, liver necrosis and infertility also occur.

Sufficient selenium may help to prevent cataract and certain types of cancer. Also, it has been found to be helpful in cases of allergy to inhaled substances such as house dust mite, animal dandruff and pollen.

It is thought to be necessary for normal growth. It has been found to prevent chromosome damage in tissue culture. Selenium will combine with toxic metals such as lead, and help to remove them from the body. Due to this, significant levels of toxic metals will lower selenium levels. Research from the USA has linked selenium deficiency with Down’s Syndrome.

It is interesting to note that fluoride is antagonistic to selenium, and in Florida it was reported that there were four times as many Down’s Syndrome babies born after the introduction of fluoridation to the water supply.
Animal sources are richer than vegetables, so vegetarians may need to supplement their selenium.

Foresight would advise hair analysis before supplementing, as too much can also be dangerous. People who use selenium-containing anti-dandruff shampoos in the bath need to be aware of this. Some Xerox copying machines can produce a lot of selenium in the atmosphere.

Selenium is found in:
Brewer’s Yeast, Whole grains, Garlic, Liver, Eggs.
