exclusion diets

Has anyone been on a exclusion diet before? Any useful feedback?

I am planning to go on one for a month to see what effect it has on the headaches i get 2-3 times weekly. I was lucky that someone at Aberdeen Uni in nutrition was looking for a candidate for her studies so thats me!

The only problem is that I would have to go a month without
dairy, wheat, yeast, alcohol, chocolate, citrus, caffene, any processed food, honey etc.

Basically my diet would be rice, lots of veg (1kg per day!), limited meat and fish and water, limited fruit, non wheat cereals. ouch!

Im planning to start on thursday.

P.s anyone  out there got some good rice recipes? I'll mainly live on south indian style cooking I think. I need to eat 250g of brown rice a day!
JamesB

oh and I have to eats lots of cabbage and brocolli so recipes for that appreciated. I can have meat twice a week and spicy Cabbage and mince is good but I need more!

Better check first whether you have any restriction on spices... Some of them might influence your headaches, too.

I did go on a similar diet once - but only stuck to this really strict regime for a week, then gradually introduced the other items one by one. However, considering I don't even eat meat and fish, it was a bit dull at first! Had lots of rice cakes, rye crispbread and oatcakes (although you have to watch it - some of them contain wheat). Fortunately I like all that.

Ooh a toughie.
I quite like baked rice dishes. Bung your chopped veg, a cup of rice and two cups of boiling water into a casserole dish and bake in a medium oven until rice is cooked. You can add heaps of different things to this basic dish like, lemon rind and juice, spinach, curry paste/spices, chickpea etc etc

cabbage stirfried with veg is really nice, different types of coleslaw using vinagrette or aoili rather than mayonnaise.
Cabbage soups - cabbage and apple, lightly curried cabbage soup, cabbage, veg and bean soup.

What about eggs? broccoli frittata or infact any veg frittata.

Rice stuffed peppers/courgette or aubergine.

spice question

thanks. the spice question is one i was already planning to ask my nutritionist on wed. She suggested lots of spicy recipes butlike u say, some spices are probably excluded and I need to find out which

aubergines

veg fritters, that sounds ok. I have to use only olive oil though.

limited aubergines are ok (nightshade family I think), limits on tomatoes as well.

3 egss per week allowed, meat twice a week and fish twice a week.

I did some years ago and for the first 4 days could only eat about 10 items - it was hell, but it did point me in the right direction to the food allergies I have.  In the end I went for proper testing but it did certainly help in the short term.

Beware of getting withdrawal symptoms, especially if you eat a lot of wheat, dairy products or consume a lot of caffiene (chocolate, coffee and tea are often the worst culprits)

Personally I'd stick with the headaches and simply buy in plenty of asprins

I occasionally try and cut down on the amount of caffiene that I drink but I always tend to go back to it (even after weeks away from it) 'cos there just isn't anything else to drink that effectively fills tha gap IMO.

i know what you mean but ive been having constant headaches for about 10 years and this is only a short term thing to answer the question
Is it a food trigger?

I take lots of paracetomol (within limits still) and dont like doing this.

ive managed to be pretty much dairy free for the last few weeks without probs but caffene is going to be hard.

in a way, I am also curious as to what effect it has on me and what its like eating as our ancestors did (although they had beer!)

yes food can be a trigger,  I used to have migranes before I cut out caffiene, grains and dairy produce (and onions which I love).  I havent suffered a migraine now for probably nearly 10 years since restricting my diet.

Its a hassle, especially when eating out, but the worst bit was finding out what was causing the problems

My daughter has coeliac disease, and this was diagnosed by blood test and then surgery. She had been ill for many years beforehand, and we have to really watch her diet.

She can't have anything with gluten or wheat in, and we are finding other things that are triggering her symptoms all the time. The latest is glucose syrup, but only in certain things. Apparently some glucose syrups are made with wheat derivatives, but you don't know which ones until you try them.

I get migraines triggered by some chocolate. I can't eat Thorntons chocolate, and discovered last week that I can't have Galaxy either.

Does it have to be all rice? I like pot barley cooked like risotto - makes a nice change. Or quinoa, millet etc.
Zaf

my allergies were eventually properly diagnosed by blood tests - I'd singled out quite a lot by the pulse diet (but realise coeliac is proberly different in that respect).

If a practitioner advises an exclusion diet its well worth trying it imo - even though its a grim experience in the first place!

Are you allowed soya products?  Tofu can be a very good source of protein.  Be aware of using soy sauce though- get a 'wheat free' version.  I think Tamari is usually wheat free.

Luckily, there are plenty of ingredients in the health food shops and the Co-op (at least here in Stornoway and I hear in Forres) has a exclusion diet/health food section now - you can get wheat free pasta etc.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!
JamesB

thanks. soya is certainly allowed and the diet specifically excludes soy sauce. Protein shouldn't be too much of an issue since i can have some meat and fish and will be eating lots of pulses.
