End of democracy in north-east Scotland

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/s...empire-attempts-to-gag.5535854.jp

Trump has started his bullying tactics and threats.  If Aberdeenshire Council bow down to his demands then we can NEVER trust the council OR the councillors again.

There has never been a planning application like this - NO-ONE is going to stop this man once he gets the go-ahead, by fair means or foul, and we will all rue the day Donald Trump first set his sights on the Menie Estate.
lachlanandmarcus

completely agree, the council are going to be in a lot of trouble if they go ahead with CPOs...
Clydesdaleclopper

Me thinks a claim for deprivation of property under article 1 of the first protocol of the European Convention on Human Rights should be encouraged.
Smooth Hound

hes a one isnt he think he may come unstuck here though
lachlanandmarcus

apparently hes offered Forbes £350k to buy a new house and £50k a year job at the new resort...so far Forbes has refused but there are hints he is wobbling a bit (saying he will talk to them if they publicly apologise to him) - at least thats what the Times said today
wildgarlic

yeah I read that bit too http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8189456.stm

Michael Forbes said he wants four apologies from Trump and his employees before he will speak to them .....  That's not saying before he will sell his house and land to them!

mmm no I know, but why else would he want to engage with them? I think in the end most people have their price, hopefully Im wrong, and I wouldnt really blame him for taking some irresistable figure.
IainC

TBH, I do think that EVERYONE does have their price. You (or I) may have morals we think we'd live by, but if the figure was high enough, that you could go off and live your life a lot better, educating more people and helping out more people, you'd probably go for it. It's just that in most cases we never get that oppertunity.

CPO though is f***ed up IMO... was neither here nor there about T before... but I would be VERY angry about him abusing those powers of the council, and TBH, wouldn't think that the council would last overly long if they abused them either (I hope so anyway).
Maidenstone

I must be honest and wonder if I was threatened with a CPO because of the stupidity and brown-nosing of the council, and that I would only get a trifling sum in payment, I might consider doing a deal with the De'il himself (Trump).  However, if it happens once and they all get away with it, who knows who will be next?  It could be YOU! (and here I need a scary face symbol!)

If you feel strongly about the use of compulsory purchase orders to help fill the pockets of a dubious, oft-bankrupt 'property developer' then please write to your local councillor and ask them to vote against using CPOs in this case.
IainC

As and when/if it happens... I might be following "Corrosion of Conformity"'s advice...

...they have a song entitled "Vote with a Bullet".

Seems entirely proper to me most of the time anyway, but if they are gonna pander to the whim of some rich bloke, it might have to be taken seriously by all of us
Smooth Hound

lets not forget that this is of national importance

Trump

Absolutely astounds me that CPO can be considered. This site had an SSSI designation. If anyone had deliberately damaged that SSSI, they would end up in court. Business and politics are often incentuously  linked, but to be so, so overtly, is shocking and trashes the idea of the natural environment being held in conservation status for the good of humankind.... unless someone comes along with a big wallet. Does Trump think that the chemicals and water necessary to maintain a golf course are really going to improve this site? Maybe if he had to live in a bubble with the run-off from his own golf courses, then he'd wake up to the fact that we all need the natural environment, to provide buffers for human pollution, from air, water and land. Without it, none of us would be here.
Ethics?
Morals?
Love of money is the root of all evil. Maybe Trump has forgotten that he is human too....
And if CPO is used, every Councillor should hang their heads in shame. They'd be overtly abusing the system.
They would not be representing the wish of the Northast People.
Smooth Hound

i dont blame trump, he is a business man, i blame the people who have pushed it through, and the people who have let it. and frankly the reasons given for approval dont stand up.
Sassinak

I must admit that I have been sat on the fence regarding the whole Trump fiasco, but marginally tending towards approval of it.
But not when innocent people get ridden over roughshod and the council makes what must surely be illegal moves to evict people from their properties.
I don't blame Trump for this, he is a businessman and will do whatever he can to make his money.
The people to blame are the councillers who were elected to impartially uphold the law and the wishes of the electorate. They are failing in their duty and the buck stops entirely at their doors !!!
Maidenstone

I was told tonight at a meeting that Michael Forbes has no intention of doing a deal with Trump - apparently it is something the local rag spirited up out of thin air.

Now Trump has applied for full planning permission to start work on the golf course.  Seems like he is trying to make a point, by getting to work on the area in the SSSI first.

I wouldn't give that man an inch.  I am convinced that Aberdeenshire Council will rue the day they ever started dealing with him - he is going to make fools out of them all!
Smooth Hound

he certainly is

You might like to see how Donald Trump operates:

He now has an application in for full planning for marram grass planting, preparatory earthworks and chestnut pale fencing on the inner dues at Menie links - go on the council website
www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk, click on P in the alphabet, click on planning register and type in APP/2009/2479 to see the details.

But if you feel strongly against the possibility of compulsory purchase, please write to your local councillor and ask them to vote against it.  If the council start forcing people to sell their homes to property developers, goodness knows where it will end.  You could be next!!
Smooth Hound

i think an example was set though, with the lib guy who voted against it, so i would imagine most councillors will be treading very carefully over this,
Maidenstone

No, it was most of the councillors who voted Martin Ford off the infrastructure committee - or those who voted did.  Many of them abstained - it was thought that they didn't want him to go but were too cowardly to vote him to stay on.  The great fear is that they will again abstain and that this vote will be lost again.
Smooth Hound

thats what im saying ,
Julie

Why can't these fools see that to waste your vote is detrimental to the common good.
Smooth Hound

good question . the answers in the question they are fools
Maidenstone

Trump has put in a planning application for maram grass planting/earthworks/fencing, despite their statement for the application acknowledging the fact that Scottish Ministers approved their original application with 46 conditions.  One of these stated that NO work should be carried out until their masterplan had been approved by Aberdeenshire Council, and that the masterplan should be presented to the council in early 2010.  They are pushing to start work in November 2009!  Another indication of Trump's methods of doing just what he bl***y-well likes!!!  Please object if you feel strongly about it.  I have done!!
