easing tummy ache?

J has been poorly since Sunday - high temperature, started with a headache and leg ache on Sunday then Monday was tummy ache - last night he was doubled up in pain with his tummy and I almost called the doctor out. Then I stopped using the 'Medinol' and used Calpol instead and within a couple of hours (5am) he was more settled and finally woke for the day after 8am and has been reasonably ok today - still a little warm but not much in the way of complaints about tummy.

Later this afternoon he went to the toilet for no 2 and then half an hour later he's complaining about the sore tummy again and is in a fair amount of pain. More calpol and a warm beddybear to snuggle up to and he's off to bed with a story - hopefully he'll sleep through, but does anyone have any good ideas for comforting a sore tum?

When little S had a sore tummy I also did the calpol and something warm on her tummy (I used a heat pad warmed in the microwave). It did the trick, she was well again the next day. I hope poor J feels better soon, if not I would take him along to the GP.

thanks MN - I would have taken him today but for the fact that he felt better in the morning. Spoke to D's dad on the phone (retired GP) but he couldn't really offer a diagnosis over the phone for obvious reasons.

I should ring your GP WG if he is still bad today

He had a good sleep last night and seems ok again today.

probably just a bug, as you know young children get tummy ache from all sorts of illnesses including ear infections

Also, young children sometimes can't always tell that the sore tummy is being too full of food, or not enough food. Have seen where ours will complain of sore tummys, which disappear when(if) you get some decent food into them.

If it keeps happening, then it is worth consulting your doctor because Migraine in children can show stomach symptoms rather than the more usual headache
MJ

RUMJ's migraines started in her tummy, it was unusual as most young migraine sufferers are boys.
But a more common one is constipation, even children with "perfect" diet can suffer from it, and it can give slight raised temp. Most children are a little shy when talking about having hard poos, to be honest we all are.
But after 3days I would take child to doctor.

You obviously haven't worked with some of the people I have... they sometimes delight in telling you everything about it when they come back

He's been fine today - and I'm hoping that we don't get more snow tomorrow so that he can go back to school

If it happens again in the middle of the night for example, then some warm oil - olive, grape or whatever and a gentle massage, using finertips or palms, stroke in a clockwise motion around the belly button, slowly making the circles bigger. This follows the direction of the large bowel and will relieve any constipation or trapped. Even if he doesn't have any of these problems, the physical contact, the one-on-one attention, the warmth will all help soothe him emotionally, which will relax his muscles and hopefully get him back to sleep.

i'm not sure how helpful this is, but I swear by peppermint tea.  I swear at my digestion 'cos its always giving me grief, but peppermint tea helps.
