I agree with Smooth!

I've tried St John's Wort (tablets) in the past and I did find it to be of help.

Don't know how well it grows around here - we had loads of it when I worked in France, but the climate was a little different!
Diana

Have you tried exercise - sounds daft, but making a point to get some fresh air and a gentle stroll without having to get anywhere or do anything in a hurry can be a great help.

St John's Wort - I have tons of the stuff in my garden, can't get rid of it. Wouldn't recommend anyone grows it - it's bad enough to make you depressed!

Start a business selling it?

From someone who is just recovering from a horrid bout - I swear by Omega 3,6 and 9 oil.
I have a pretty good diet but this really works for me.....

Let me know how you get on - but don't suffer in silence
Julie

Chamomile tea, it's an acquired taste but has a very calming effect.
Get plenty of sleep and the fresh air sounds like a great idea.
When I was feeling low I used to use my mum's trick. You wear something you feel good in, make yourself look nice and then look in the mirror. Tell yourself, hey, I don't look that bad so I must be ok.
A positive outlook will do you more good than anything you can buy in a shop. Remind yourself of all the good things in your life and focus hard on them too.

I made a sampler and hung it on the wall so that I see it every day. It's the ever popular saying;

Grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

It is good advice and has served me well, hope some of this helps  :smt056

Great tips Julie - I am not religious but I do have a copy of The Serenity Prayer on a kitchen cabinet.
It really helps me.....
Julie

I didn't know it was religious, you learn something new every day

I think that all too often we know what needs to be changed and it is too hard to do for one reason or another. It can seem more painful than just accepting your lot, so the cycle continues.
Another thing that helped me through a crisis once was to write down my feelings every day. I looked back at it a year later and was so glad I hadn't told all that stuff to anyone  . It helped at the time though, so it served it's purpose.
Smooth Hound

the best source of omega oil, would be mackerel for your breakfast,

It's good to keep a note book by your bed too. That way if you wake up worrying about stuff, you can write it down and go back to sleep safe in the knowledge that you'll not have forgotton what was so important a thing at 2am (but you obviously couldn't do anything about it at 2am - if that makes sense)

http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_rosemary.htm

Rosemary is considered to be an excellent and a wonderful stimulant, especially with regard to the heart, nervous system and brain. As mentioned earlier, by the very fact that rosemary is capable of increasing the flow of blood to the head, it can improve both concentration and memory, and also for treating migraines and other forms of headaches. The herb can also be used for a myriad of ailments such as anxiety, nervous tension, depression, exhaustion, insomnia, lethargy, and as a rejuvenating tonic during convalescence and for the elderly people. Rosemary can improve vitality in the individual, and it can effectively stimulate digestion, as well as relieve flatulence and distension, thereby enhancing the appetite and increasing the flow of digestive juices. It can help in the flow and movement of food and wastes through the body, thus removing stagnant food within the digestive system, and also improving sluggish digestion. This helps to a large extent in the assimilation of nutrients from the food into the body. The bitters present in rosemary stimulate liver and gallbladder function, increasing the flow of bile and aiding digestion of fats. The herb has also been commended for arresting to a certain extent the aging process in the individual, and it serves as a rejuvenating tonic as well. Rosemary has also been credited for being a powerful antioxidant.

Be careful with Rosemary if you have high blood pressure.
Smooth Hound

Somebody else suggested a Wii to me - what is it?

I feel a bit like you at the moment, FWS... Can't sleep - well, not during the night, anyway - and feel rotten during the day. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing it will get better, sooner or later.
fluffywelshsheep

The Wii is a game console made by Nintendo.
The Wii fit is a hitech scales that you can plug in to it and a exercise programe and it monitors progress.
It not  100& acurate with the bmi scales as far as i can see.

take a look here http://wii.com/

Linz
Ina

Thanks, Linz - I'll have a look at that later - must rush off to a meeting now!

I'm not really into game consoles etc...
Maidenstone

Fluffywelshsheep - please be careful with herbal remedies too, they can have side effects too - after all they are drugs.  After a few months on a very mild antidepressant, with its accompanying vivid horrible dreams, constant tiredness and dampening down of all my senses(!), I weaned myself off over 3 weeks and immediately felt better.  Fortunately things weren't too bad for me, but I really did feel that I was much better without them.  Oats are supposed to be good for depression, and fish oils - I now take cod liver oil daily - and a spell in the sun (if there is any) is really good for you.  Be kind to yourself, give yourself little treats, if you are feeling particularly down - accept it - and do something to make yourself happier.  I began religiously watching "You've Been Framed" every Saturday to have a really good laugh - things like that really do help.  You are poorly, just as if you had flu, and you must take things easy and be kind to yourself - you will get better soon.  Lots of us are thinking about you and hoping you Get Well Soon!
dizzyblond

Well said Maidenstone and from personal experience there is certainly a place for anti depressants but they do have some nasty side effects.  they will never be my choice but nor is living so miserably.
I am very fortunate that I have a fab GP here and its really worth asking for a little help if you feel that bad - believe me I've been there.
Diet, fresh air are very important in my world - yoga helps me in a big way( when I make the effort to do so)  but one thing I have found amazing is counselling.  I am lucky enough to have got some through my GP and I have waited a while BUT it has been worth the wait.  I knew what was making me so down and stressed but couldn;t make any sense of it.   Counselling is hard work, upsetting, exhausting but is amazingly empowering.  If there is anything I can do let me know -its a horrible situation but you're not alone - warm hugs xxxxx

Thanks everyone, I have had a back case before and got myself out of it. I was give the stuff that thoses teenagers had the ones that comitted suicided. I felt the same and they worn't helpping me so i just stopped them (didn't even wean myself off tem as i felt worse) But at the moment i am having good and bad days  some day i feel that i just am able to put one foot in front of the other. Then some day i could run a races in 60 secs.
At the moment am not sure if the kalm are helpping they have done in the past. If i can't get myself motivated i'll get an appointment soon, with te doctor and see what she says
gardenbaby

Sorry No Plants but something that works...

Have you tried Magnolia? You can get it at the Chineese doctors or on the web. Three tablets a day works for me during the long winters. I would see a doctor to check if this is okay for you. Best to be really careful. There is an apothocary in the mall downtown aberdeen they are very nice and can suggest some very natural things for you. I hope you feel better soon.
dizzyblond

Whilst laying in candlelit bath just now a couple of things came to mind - chamomile tea, great for calming you as is lemon balm if you have it in your garden just add a couple of leaves to some boiling water and lavender oil on your pillow at night ( just a couple of drops) should help you sleep.
lachlanandmarcus

Im awful, I tend to watch documentaries about The Boy Who Had Three Heads or stuff like that and it really helps me feel more positive, simply because they are dealing with so much stuff that I fates willing will never have to.

I find music helps too, especially Abba/Madonna type, even though I normally only really like folk.

The Wii actually is quite a bit different to a lot of them though. I kind of slated it when it first came out as the graphics are quite cartoony compared to a "proper" console.

But the controllers for it make all the difference. I was hooked when I had a shot of my mates one, ended up buying one for xmas (as much for me as the kids) and we all love it, even my dad has had a shot of it playing against my daughter.

Very easy to pick up how to use it and play, the Wii Fit looks quite good as well but is hard to find and bloomin' pricey too if you can find it.

Well, that's out then. Seems a weird concept anyway, that I should have to invest in a game console to give me more energy! :?

I think the point of it is that doing exersize yourself can sometimes be a bit boring or you can't be bothered. Nintendo have wrapped it up in a game and you get more points, etc for doing stuff correctly, etc.

Not tried the Wii Fit at all, but have played the boxing game and you will be sweating when you have finished playing it... it's quite active, not a "sit down twiddle your fingers" type of console at all.
fluffywelshsheep

i think it's brilliant, I have not had a game console since the mega drive and master system days (donkeys years) The kids do have the playstation 2/3 but i would say that the controller are a lot different. In have a couple of active game as well as the sit on your bum games and i love it. The wii fit will also tell you off if you stop half way thought which i had to do when i was doing the press ups lol.
It also give you lots of posative comments too.
