Courses & Networking

Hi All

We have recently moved Aberdeen Forwards premises from Dyce to Poynernook Rd (opposite Kwik Fit) just off Market Street.  Our new (old) building is the start of a new project to create a Sustainable Communities Centre in Aberdeen.  Amongst other things we do ther is to provide shared office and meeting rooms for groups business to utilise.  We are also looking to develop craft classes and ecofriendly workshops.  The Centre will grow to provide information and advice on local social and environmental projects (currently Composting and Real Nappies) and we have a wide range of volunteering opportunities.
One project we run at the Centre is the Creative Waste Exchange which takes in office furniture, craft materials and stationary from businesses across the city/shire and sells it back to community members at low cost rather than it going to landfill.

Well that was the introduction...

What I was really posting for was ideas for workshops.  Does anyone have any burning ideas for what would be really usefull classes to put on?
Any usefull craft courses?  We already do Upholstery courses and have lots of new sewing machines for setting up sewing related classes.

Anyone wants to run a specific class and needs space we can provide.
Just float any ideas in and I can discuss them with the team here.

Loads of ideas for workshops but you are miles away from us - great for Aberdeen folk but not much use for us out in the sticks

We have held spinning demo days, knitting, all kinds of crafty stuff really. We try to hold these at each others houses so that the same person isn't doing the travelling all the time and we encourage lift sharing where ever possible.

BTW - would you be able to put a link to the Neeps website on your Aberdeen Forward website please

Hello Tony

We also run the same sort of thing this side in the sticks (albeit closer sticks - Banchory) HOWEVER I get a lot of queries from Aberdeen folk as they're unwilling to travel further afeild (cost, ecological and otherwise) ref our permaculture starter workshops and general gardening. They are usually looking for complete and utter beginner stuff, growing in containers etc. Not sure how that would transfer to the classroom (only). Are you the same folk with the gardens for the special needs kids?

Otherwise, dressmaking and knitting classes have gine down a storm. Seems to be folk want to make do and mend again. Which is good.

Best of luck anyway

Courses

My OH wants to do a furniture restoration course. Depending on when and where, work etc, he'd be interested.

Ideally out of the city would be better though. Beth

Hi Tony,
I know it isn't craft related, however would you be able to host something on Transition and Peak Oil? Mibbe this isn't the type of thing you mean, but I am trying to arrange presentations for as many places as possible.

cheers, Gus

Hi Tony, this sounds like a really positive project!  How about courses on bodging / rustic joinery / bridge/stile building / micro renewables ...?

If you ever need a venue for outside projects, we have a farm 16 miles west of Aberdeen so might be able to act as host.
