Courgette disaster

I planted out three courgette plants into my wee plot last week and they have been doing not bad, I bought them from the over priced garden centre in inverurie, but anyway, I checked them this morning about 10-ish and the main leaves have gone extremely floppy and transparent, I thought frost, but surely not, the weather has been great?  Can the sun damage them in the morning?

Such an amatuer gardener so any advice appreciated

I've definitely had two nights of frost just outside Banchory. With the clear skies, it could be that ...

We've had quite a heavy frost here the last few days, so yes, unfortunately it sounds like frost.

It's still a bit early to be planting out tender stuff without protection (fleece/mini tunnel etc).

Oh dear, what can I use as protection, I have a few things in the plot, broad bean plants and leeks, and also runner beans.  I also have just planted out a few small salad plants into pots and have all my seeds growing outside in pots, will they be alright?  or should I bring all the pots in at night, I could put them in my garage I suppose... thanks

they should be fine,  are the courgettes dead or do you think they will come back,  you could drape an old net curtain over your pots and things at night.   best keep your eye on the weather, if you put your postcode into this,

i find it mostlyaccurate, keep in mind this is mcduff weather, if you change it to yours and then put it as a favourite it is easy to bring it up anytime you want
Diana

Broad beans and leeks will be fine, but the runners will need protection.

I'd bring any pots you can in over night. As Smooth says, net curtains are good for protection, as is fleece and polythene. 2 panes of glass leaned against each other to make an arch will work too.

Smooth hound - I think the courgettes will live (just) the new growth in the middle doesn't seem to have been damaged for some reason it was just the large outer leaves.

I'll use the curtains trick, and take some in at night - thanks for the advice guys

Courgettes

Mine did just the same. I grew them from seed and hardened them off a little in greenhouse with door open then in wee plastic greenhouse thing. Needed space, so put them in raised bed but in sheltered part of veg patch. Hopefully they'll recover, draped black weed suppreser over last night and weighted in case of wind.

cut off the damaged leaves, take a look at the forecast, if you think its going to be cold then put some upside down pots/buckets over them at night, with a rockon them to keep them from blowing away, oh and if the soil is dry water the soil around them , not the leaves though before you cover them,  dont water them first thing in  the morning, or when the suns beating on them,
give them a week or 2 and te risk of frost will have gone and the plants will be strong again.

I got some net curtains in the charity shop today for 80p, I've pegged it in to cover my courgettes at night, I hope this is what you meant otherwise it'll look like it has just blown off my washing line...ha ha ha

Will get some more if this is the right stuff...
Smooth Hound

no thats fine, now if ou save your milk cartons, clean them and fill them with water, you can use them as weights to hold them down if its windy     abc, youll see what i mean you can use them with fleece too
Smooth Hound
