Council pledges Peterhead recycling centre will open

Council pledges Peterhead recycling centre will open

Quote:
COUNCIL bosses have pledged that a trouble-hit recycling centre will finally open its doors in the coming weeks.

The £1.2million waste facility at Peterhead was due to open in September.

A blunder during construction made it unfit for purpose – while there is room to hold several skips, there’s not enough space to move them around.

Builders will have to go back to the site and widen the bays before the facility can be used.

The centre has been built at Dales Industrial Estate, on the southern edge of Peterhead, to replace the existing skip site nearby.

A need for a new, expanded facility was raised in 2005, after the local authority made radical changes to the way household waste was disposed of.

The current skip centre is too small to cope with the increase in rubbish being dumped there by residents.

Last night a spokesman for the Aberdeenshire Council assured locals the new site would be opening soon.

“We are very pleased with the work done on the new centre,” he said.

“Although there have been some unavoidable delays which mean it has taken a little longer to complete than planned.”

He said: “The skip bays are large enough for operational purposes at the moment, but as part of a ‘snagging list’ we will be increasing their size slightly for increased manoeuvrability and safety.

“We thought it was best to postpone opening the centre until it is fully up and running, given the commendable desire of local people to responsibly dis- pose of as much of their waste as they can,” he added.

“We expect it to be open in the next few weeks.”

The Peterhead development is one of a number of centres being established across Aberdeenshire, with a similar scheme opening its doors at Fraserburgh nearly a year ago.

The project has been partly funded by the Scottish Government but the total raised for the Peterhead project fell some £380,000 short.

As a result, the council directed funding from other projects to make sure the facility went ahead.

we have waited long enough that a few weeks wont harm

apparently two skips will fit in each bay unfortunitly the numptys did not plan on how to get them in and out of place bit like building a garage wide enough for a car but not being able to open the car door

queues since christmas for the old site have been massive the old site grid locks asthere is no were to pass so if a big van or trailor is unloading a lot cars have to wait to get to the skips.

give the staff there due they make sure that all rubbish goes in to the right skips but god help you if you put something that could be recycled in to house hold. as there is so many differant skips and only one for house hold it can be manic down there, i have been turned away a few times because the skips are full
