Don't worry - gives you a chance to get on with something other than NEEPS! Makes a nice change for once, doesn't it!

Always worth making a mental note of which updates are installing when you install them, so you can remove them as and when they f*** up (notice I said when not if )

Never a true word spoken.
They changed part of IE in the last round of Updates so if you have a firewall you will need to give it new permissions. They also changed the appearance of the connection box, so I don't know what they were trying to do!
I think you use FF though, so that would not apply.
I have automatic updates turned off so as I can pick and chose what I want and can also do a restore point before and after the updates, so if anything does go wrong I can go back to where I was.
Go-Back has also been a life saver for me on many an occasion.
When all else fails I turn to Go-back and it has never failed me yet!
Now, is that tempting fate or what?

I'm not sure exactly what happened but after messing about with a few clicks of the mouse it seems ok again.
FED up of the broadband dropping out all the time though - it goes through spells where it will drop out every 2 minutes or so - yet they (bt) still maintain that there is nothing wrong!)

I got a spell of that as well and it was very annoying.
Everyone including BT said there was no fault in the line, yet when it came back on line it was slower than it had been!
Strange of what?
The ISP blames BT and BT say there is no fault and it is the ISPs servers.
I had enough of BT when I was on Dial-up way back when....
I wouldn't use BT now if they paid me to use them.
When the local loop is out of this area, so is BT
In the bin, they give you the impression that they don't want you anyway, they would rather sell the service to another provider and have one bill than a lot of little ones
Well, they will get their wish with me as soon as......

What are the options - as far as I can tell we've got the option of bt... or ao-hell or someone else that piggybacks onto bt.

Try doing a speed test to see how good or bad your connection is.
Pick the Yellow server or the one nearest you.
Then try one further away and see just how slow it gets :?

give WinSockFix a go , never hurts and can fix a up a shonky net connection (and yes, shonky is indeed a technical term).

Going by what I remember you are on WG, that is quite good.
Shame they can't keep the connection going!
Why can't the ISPs and BT not hold their hand up and say "Sorry, it was our fault, we hope it is fixed now".
No chance of BT saying that as they have to compensate you now for a downed telephone line.
ISPs should have to face a maximum speed for the line or finds.
I can accept that there are times when the servers will be very busy, but we are paying for a service, and we should expect it 95% of the time.

The vast majority of ADSL connections have no SLA's though (Service Level Agreements)... BT's terms and conditions are something along the lines of a "fix in best time" or similar. ie it could be down for days and you'd get nothing from it.
It's different to leased lines where you have an agreed connection speed and resolution times.
We pay a lot for network connections at work, ADSL is cheap for what it is. The kind of connection a lot of us have at home now, would have cost a fortune to put in place a couple of years back.
I agree though, the odd occasions I've lost service it feels like a huge loss

I think we all understand that IanC but we still get when we have no connection.
Besides, it should be cheaper now that supply is starting to outstrip demand
Yes I know, but when your connection speed is supposed to be 8Mbs and it is now below 5Mbs and they tell you it never was at 7.1Mbs that you know it was at, it does get very frustrating
I WILL be changing ISPs before their contract is up.
ISPs get your act together

I know how frustrating it can be... it's even worse if you are on call as I am and need to do something that can be simply achieved by remote control... but have to drive into work instead... at silly o' clock in the morning.
The connection I have is UP TO 8Mb... due to where I stay (crappy lines and the distance from the exchange) I only get about 2.5Mb most of the time... it has been up to about 4.5-5Mb at times. TBH, 2Mb is fine enough for everything I do on it anyway I find.
I'm using Eclipse and the only issues I've had from a service PoV have been BT issues, not Eclipse ones. Also used them for a couple of business "backup lines" and not had a problem. I do know however that a lot of guys further down south have been having issues with them, more than likely down to the number of people on the exchange but I've not had an issue up here.

that "up to" business p***es me off, I know a few people in the UK on that and all report that it's almost never anywhere close.
I get
, which is exactly what I pay for (well, 2mb, but near as) I'm happy to report, and frankly thats how it should be across the board :x

I am now baffled
We are supposed to be on a 1mb connection and just look at the result I just got

Wow - I've just uninstalled Norton Antivirus and installed AVG free instead. All of a sudden I can access firefox again, msn messenger and napster too. What a difference.
I had a few problems uninstalling the Norton stuff - I couldn't do it via the Add Remove Programs but instead visited the Symantec site thanks to a link on Selfsufficientish and downloaded a program that removes every trace of Norton from your computer.
YAY!!!!

I agree, if you pay for 8Mb you should get the max the line will allow.
