Compost clothing taken to catwalkCompost clothing taken to catwalk
| Quote: | Fashion students in the Scottish Borders have designed a range of clothes to be worn in the garden and then thrown on a compost heap.
The biodegradable outfits are on show at the Gardening Scotland exhibition at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.
Students at Heriot Watt University's School of Textile and Design in Galashiels came up with the clothes.
They are part of an eco-fashion show taking place in BBC Scotland's Beechgrove Theatre at the event.
The students have produced two collections entitled Gardening Meets Haute Couture and Gardening Clothing Using Green Fibres.
They were challenged to make the clothes using organically produced or eco-friendly fabrics.
'Actually wearable'
A range of materials including hemp and potato starch were used to put together the outfits.
The project involved year two students on the BSc Clothing, Design and Manufacturing course.
Each one produced two garments for the show.
According to director of learning and teaching Jayne Smith the challenge was to make "something a gardener would actually wear".
Gardening Scotland 2008 runs from 30 May to 1 June at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston. |

Must admit - this leaves me rather bewildered. What a gardener would usually wear is any old clothes; and I compost most of my stuff at the end of it's very long life anyway, as I wear almost exclusively natural fibres. So what's new?

I can't help thinking they've rather missed the point too, it is a bit 'throw away culture' don't you think.
Full marks though for correctly identifying a topic that will draw attention and is currently trendy, it got them some publicity so it worked out well.
