Cloves query

I was reading a blog I follow, simple-green-frugal-co-op.blogspot.com (I hope I've remembered that right. One of the regular writers, whose stuff I quite like, the greening of gavin, forgot exact link but his blog is featuring latest article, writes of cloves for toothache, I knew of this already but he writes an detailed acount of what he did, tea and tea soaked cloves and how it worked and for how long.

I did wonder if the numbing of his mouth might be good for sore throats and also could children use it? Strong stuff, you have to be so careful!

On that note, not necessarily cloves, does anyone know of a natural child friendly cure for mouth ulcers?

Ulcers

Is the corsydyl the gel or mouthwash?

My youngest tends to bite her lip or inside of her mouth when she gets a cold and it gets inflamed but she cannot handle strong smelling/tasting chemicals, even tooth paste has to be a certain one or two.

In an ideal world I suppose, I need to get her drinking a very bland herbal tea with antiseptic properties.

Ooh thinking on feet here, will check my homeopathy encyclopaedia!

you can approach you pharmacist under minor ailments (prescription given out via pharmacists) and ask them for the best stuff.

My son gets severe mouth ulcers because he chews them when small.  He gets a gel from the chemist that gets rid of the ulcer usually in one application.

If the child is getting lots of ulcers and has no underline illness look at your toothpaste.  A lot of people don't realise that toothpaste can cause ulcers because you are in fact allergic to it.  Took me 40 years to realise that.  I now use a natural toothpaste and mine, as well as my sons, ulcers are now very few and far between.

Ulcers

Ooohhhhh! Wow, I wonder, she does get ulcers and although healthy is on dietician prescribed vits for her limited diet. She has huge tooth paste issues, do you get the tooth paste via the pharmacist or froma health shop?

My green pharma book by Dr James Duke (such a fab book!) says this on clove oil re toothache...

Quote:

Oil of clove contains a great deal of the anaesthetic, antiseptic chemical eugenol. Cloves are 5 to 10 times richer in eugoenol that other eugenol sources listed in my database. In fact, many dentists use it as a dental anaesthetic and pain reliever, especially when doing root canals.

Germany's Commision E, the body of natural medicine experts that makes herbal recommendations to the country's counterpart of the American's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorses oil of clove as a local anaesthetica nd antiseptic for toothache. Even a scientific commitee reporting to the FDA commented that iol of clove was only one of the 12 ingredients commonly found in touthache preparations that was "safe and effective for temporary use on a tooth with throbbing pain". You can buy over-the-counter preparations of clove oil to use yourself to numb toothache. the oil is placed directly on the tooth, not ingested.

For mouth ulcers he says - often caused by things such as - alchohol, chewing gum, citrus fruits, coffee, dairy products, pinapple, spicy foods, tomatoes, toothpast and vinegar and other acidec foods. He says he's "all for using ice and rinsing your mouth with saltwater". Herbal alternatives he lists while finding what 'stuff' is causing the sores...

** Myrrh
** Tea (ordinary leaves...a spent bag on the sore....or bearbetty, eucalyptus, St Johns' wort, sage, raspberry, peppermint, licorice)
* Cankeroot (canker...another name for mouth ulcers plant also known as goldthread
* Goldenseal
* Licoriece
* Sage
* Wild Geranium

(* he generally rates things with 1-3 leaves...I've used the asterix...3 being the best)

Not sure if any of this is relevant now i've re-read your original post FMN - but I've gone and typed it now so it can stay.

health food shops.  Incidentally I found out this information via dentist on another forum.

Try a natural toothpaste for a few weeks and see if it makes any diffrence

Teeth

Thanks Baldowrie, will do that.

Thanks Maria, wow!

The Richard Mabey book? Bought it online yesterday as it happens

Try fennel tooth paste, it worked for me for a while.
Other option is to look for low/no foaming toothpaste.
I have big problems with toothpaste, left over from bad morning sickness. Dentist says even brushing with no paste is better than not brushing at all (it's just no pleasant)
For mouth ulcers/sores I recommend corsodyl gel applied sparingly with a little finger, taste is vile which means kids remember it's medicine not something to eat the whole tube.

The only thing I can think of that might soothe the mouth ulcers for a child is ice poles or iced lollies. It won't cure them but it will numb her mouth and I can't see you having a problem getting her to eat them
If you don't want her eating the shop variety you could make your own with fruit juices, or even make your own diluting juice with blackcurrants etc. Ours are all ripening at the moment so you can get some on Tuesday as long as you don't mind picking them. I can also give you a few lolly sticks so all you will need is some small tapered plastic pots or cups (yoghurt pots maybe?)

Ohhh fab idea! I have ice lollie kits and could freeze some of the cordial as no amount of persuading got her to try the elderflower and this is an immune booster. In fact I've a recipe in Grow your own Drugs for one!!!

Thank you!

ice lollies   good idea, ill have to get an ice lolly kit, whatever that maybe   ill find out
Maria

What a marvellous idea.

Great way to give herbal 'remedy' teas to diddy ones - and SH (i know you don't 'do' fruity teas!) I'll remember that one.

SH - Any container and a stick-ish thing will do. I remember 2p tub lollys.   They were great!
Julie

It should be possible to blend the herbal stuff with nice fruity flavours to make it more palatable too.
