SANTA DELIVERS APPEAL ON SCHOOL FROM LOGIE FOLK

SARAH ROLLO

08:50 - 21 December 2006
Father Christmas accompanied pupils to meet education chiefs in Moray yesterday - his gift a dossier on why their school should be saved.

The Logie school youngsters had each written a letter explaining why their school should not be closed, and their parents and community members had included legal arguments for its retention.

The school is one of nine currently being scrutinised by Moray Council after capacity dwindled below 60% of each school's functional capacity - the maximum number of pupils the school can accommodate.

Community members from Cabrach; Crossroads, Keith; East End, Elgin; Inveravon; Knockando; Portknockie; St Peter's at Buckie, and Tomintoul are all in the same position of fighting for their school's future

This is a matter that could affect any of the smaller schools as more people move out of the countryside.

It happened on Donside at Kildrummy and at Corgarff. Kildrummy children were split between Lumsden and Towie schools and Corgarff children have to go to Strathdon - a long old hike in the winter weather!!

This happened to a local school recently. They all came to our local school. It was a shame for the kids, but it was good for the wee man because they started at the same time as he did, so there were lots of new kids starting - he wasn't the only newbie.

This is happening far too commonly here on Lewis unfortunately. Dwindling younger population in the rural villages outside of Stornoway and an ageing population on the increase - either natives or retired people coming in from the mainland. On the Isle of Scalpay in Harris, the school is having it's last year of kids and the nursery was closed. No more kids under the age of 11 now in the first time in its history. Centralisation and economics play a factor too - they are talking of closing some of the S1 and S2 provisions outwith Stornoway (as in Back where I live) and making these kids go to the Nicholson, which is now overcrowded due to other secondaries being closed and the Castle School also closed (Castle School focussed more on vocational subjects for those more geared that way). Kids are now getting 'lost' in the system there. This is my son's last year in Back (S2) and I am dreading him moving up.
