Fantastic idea - will ask around re clay. I'm pretty sure I heard someone else talk of an outdoors oven recently. Will have to pry it out of my poorly organised memory.
p.s. Is your Neep name spudulike in Harry Endfield fashion (think it was Endfield...told you my memory's rotten) or do you have a love of tatties?

Would like to see one built (and taste the results ). Didn't look overly hard the one that was built on INEBG this series.

Is it something like this that you're doing?

Would be great to hear how you get on. On this blog the clay was dug from a local farmers field. Sounds like a good free idea.

This is something that David has been promising to do for ages now - I think we should make one this year for sure. He took his fab book into school though and it disappeared :-(
This is the one we saw at an Eco Day in Presteigne, Wales - they cooked small pizzas in them.

Ive been thinking about this recently too.
We've got the bricks from the chimney of the old house we knocked down so Im keen to reuse these as part of the oven.
From looking on the web then plenty of options, looks like using lots of insulation helps (vermucite or similiar) then you can fire it up, wait for the flames to die down and you still get plenty of heat.
Anyone here got experience with doing this?
Im hoping to get something done for our house warming party (BBQ) in Juneish.

You know her so well already!
Anyone fancy having a go at helping to build one here? We could have a party here too - guessing you can't build it and then use it immediately though?

Can't see why you couldn't? I mean you need to fire it up to "cook" the clay, but once it's warm/hot I can't see why you couldn't use it to then cook with straight away... trying to remember if they used it straight away when they built one on INEBG at the young guys house.

it will take quite a while to build since you will have to wait for the various layers to dry.
i would hope to have either an pizzaovenwarming party in june or just a party!

Happy to help with oven (anyones) even better if there's a pizza gonna come out of it...cold beer too maybe...and even a party. Apols James, wasn't trying to cryptic, just like get-togethers.
Spudulike..you've not been back! How's it going with your planning...by the looks of it there's a group of wanna be oven builders (including me )

I was thinking it was sounding more like you and I would be "supervising them" with a beer or two, and waiting on the first pizza coming out

Sorry , put on a question and then don't log in .
As with all my projects going from planning to actual take a while - something to do with how a man works - before all you ladies chip in!
However plan is to build one of the simple ones as seen on the links and photos in the thread. Brick base and then Clay body. Apparently you build a sand mound cover in wet newspaper and then cover in clay/ sand (50/50mix) this can be done by making small bricks and then moulding and filling the gaps in to make smooth profile. The use of vermaculite leads on to a more complicated desgin including cost so not planning on doing that.
When built you need to leave it to dry naturally for a couple of days and then have small fires in it slowly building up the size . (when the oven is being used for real its between 200 and 300 deg C so you can go for that straight away or it is likely that the clay will crack)
See planning is going well so now into the preparation stage . how to get some free clay - any one go a field full of clay?
If I find anywhere I'll let all you budding pizza lovers know

we have a 7 acre field full of clay so you ae welcome to some!
Im going to cheat and get a neighbour with a jcb to dig up some clay for me.

May well take you up on your offer . I'll contact you nearer the time about digging up your field!!

Oh dear james ...just imagining thousands of neeps stealing the clay from your field and you being left with one major pit LOL
the one you discribed Spudulike, was built on a re-run of one of HFW's shows only a week or so ago...it did look easy enough...although i thought, they used it the same day.

Was thinking that myself... was a field... now a loch

payment is in pizza of course!
Invite me round to see the finsihed oven and offer me a slice of pizza and I'll be more than happy.
Actually we do want a pond at the bottom so even better!
I want a pond about 20m x20m and about 1m deep, top 20% is topsoil. lets assume you each need about 1/4 m3 of clay then all I need is about 128 people to make clay ovens and I get a pond out of it!

you do really want to see a pizza oven dont you(or maybe just want a party)!
with a bit of co-ordination then I may even manage to get a JCB onsite to do various bits and pieces. we wont be building a pond until Erik is at least 5 years old and can swim but we can have a trial dig to see how well it holds water (and to then have clay to give away)

was just reading an article on food production
I loved this picture, its from Hereford Waldorf School: the nursery and kindergarten bread oven!
Im still no closer to building one, too many other projects.

James, were you serious about the clay? That's the only thing holding me back is where to get clay from... I'd love to have one of these and now that I'm properly planning the garden I can now envision where it would go too!
|
JamesB
|
yeah, we have clay soil, Im not sure how suitable it wil be but I think it is. The only problem is digging it up, its hard work by hand. If there was a few people interesting then I know someone with a JCB (he's £20 per hour so for say a £5 contribution then he could directly load into a trailer). I have a few other jobs for him as well so I would get him for say 2hours to make it worth his while.
James
P.s i m happy to let you have the clay but can you not get it closer since I'd hate you to have to transport it all that way.

It seems all the clay is up your end of aberdeenshire. Deeside is sandy, Donsdide is loamy apparently... and the clay is up on the bits up tawards your area. If anyone knows better or closer to Banchory please let me know!
It's not the sort of thing you can pop to B&Q to buy either...

Much Research DoneMy book still has not surfaced but I read it fairly thoroughly and have researched this over a couple of years now.
I suggest we have a trial go at a few designs on portable but hefty bases then if success full people could take them home either pre-firing or after initial firing.
If anyone is interested we could make a list of required resources and formulate a cunning plan !
