Chickens/chicksDoes anyone know where I can get hold of a few chickens/chicks near Aboyne. Also, for a beginner, what is the best breed to go for?

It depends what you want them for.
If you have kids and want pet chickens for them. Bantams are usually best - Pekins, silkies, Polands, all become rediculously tame. But the eggs are tiny.
If you are primarily wanting eggs, then a hybrid of some sort is best, either rescued from an intensive farm or point of lay bought from a dealer
Scotads often have ads in from the bigger dealers.
Don't forget that we are always here to offer advice if you have a problem

Chickens/chicksThanks for that.
We want them mainly for eggs. I was interested in the rescue birds but not sure where to get them locally, any ideas?

ChooksTry www.thenewarc.org possibly with an.uk on end.
They have a forum you can ask through or call mobile. They're lovely and based just north of Ellon.
I've got fab layers from them before.

also another rescued chicken on here has them, but they arent too close by either.
if you want to buy closer to home, my near neighbours, Ronnie and Marion at Wester Strathweltie Tarland have just about every breed you can think of - at least 50!, and they are very well looked after (and R&M are lovely people). They would also give you advice on what would suit you and your set up.

I might have a couple going spare. We have 12 young chicks that will need homing at some point. They are a mix of black marans and isa brown x maran cross.
The problem is that I don't know what sex they are at the moment and they will need to stay with their Mum a bit longer.

Chickens/chicksThanks very much for all of that really useful information.
Pete, when you know what sex they are and they are big enough, let me know as I would definitely be interested in the chicks.

thanks for all the advice, we got four rescue chickens from the newarc and they looked very sorry for themselves. they are a bit happier now and growing some new feathers. One more question...do they need water in their coop at night or is it ok to just provide it outside during the day?

Hi Lizzy...
I dont put water inside at night for my chooks, they get their fill before going to bed and they get let out early each morning and they are fine hope this helps

would third the Ronnie recommendation. I got my ducks and sablepoots from him. Top people who genuinely love their chooks!
