Channel 4's Bringing up Baby

I didn't watch this series as I was put off by the promos, particularly by the 50's harsh routine, which seemed Victorian upper class in attitude. I was watching BBC Breakfast this morning and it seems that the 50's 'nanny' Clare Verity doesn't seem to have the qualifications and diplomas she said she had. Did anyone else watch it?

I've not seen it, but these things often make me annoyed. I can never understand why these folk want the cameras into their homes !

i watched it

I watched this programme and spent the whole time huffing at the telly and shaking my head. The strict 50's routine was terrible and the woman who was supposed to comfort the mothers guide them with the 50's routine was out of control! She was putting the babies out for hours at a time in the cold and leaving them there even if they cried and then she said that the mothers should not look at them when feeding them as they were just demanding attention. I was actually upset to see what she was saying to the mums and dads. I had just had my second little one about the time the programme was out so I don’t know if I was just very hormonal but it seemed pretty wrong to me.

I tend to follow the Attachment Parenting 'regime' where you feed on demand, respond to crying straight away and cuddle them as much as they will let you. I used as sling for all of mine, particularly No2Child as she was very colicky, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend attachment parenting to anyone.

I also attempted extended breastfeeding, but this only worked with No1Child. He was breastfed till he was 2.5 years, No2Child was allergic to my milk so she only lasted about 4 months, and No3child self-weaned at 10 months.

All this 'cry it out' stuff is torture to both mother and child. I even want to pick up crying children in the supermarket, so the thought of leaving one of my own is out of the question!
