candling an egg

How do you candle an egg?

I've tried holding it up to our brightest light and I can see nothing.

Anyone know how this is done?

Easy-Shine a small bright torch through the egg in a very dark room. The hard bit is knowing what you are looking at/for.My eggs never seem to look like the ones in the diagram!!!

A small halogen torch is the best thing to use or possibly an ordinary torch at the end of a toilet roll tube. The advantage to the toilet roll tube is that you can squash the egg onto it and cut out the gaps, that way the only light you see is passing through the egg.
Dark room and hold torch to blunt end of egg rotate egg slightly and after a few days (I can candle after 3 days but I've had lots of practice lol, you would probably need them to be a week to 10 days when you are learning) You will see what looks just like a red spider on one side of the yolk. Empty eggs look noticably paler.

It will also depend on the darkness of the shell as to how much you can see.

A proper candler makes it easier.
