Call to extend plastics recycling

Quote:
Mixed plastic items such as salad bags and yoghurt pots can be recycled cost effectively, the government's waste watchdog has said.

The Waste Recycling and Action Programme (Wrap) has published research it says proves for the first time the efficiency of this type of recycling.

They say recycling these types of materials would save £200m every year in landfill taxes and manufacturing.

This is surely an absolute essential. I reckon 90% of my rubbish is "unrecyclable" plastic. Like most of us on the good forum I do what I can - try to eschew overwrapping, buy from the greengrocers in my own bag and organic fruit & veg in compostable packaging when i can afford it but feeding a family on a budget you can't always afford to make the greenest choices. I have started a veg garden this year which I also hope will reduce my landfill.

As a kid i remember coming across a plastic bag for the first time - all paper until i was around 5. My Mum and I washed and saved them for re-use. I was the coolest kid for having sandwiches in a plastic bag rather than greaseproof paper

As has been said many times before, it would be a jolly good thing for the supermarkets and consumers to wean themselves off our plastic dependency. In the meantime a way of recycling it is surely essential.

PS why doesn't my online spellcheck recognise unrecyclable, overwrapping, compostable, or even online spellcheck?

I'm going off slightly on a tangent here but we still need to educate as many as poss re plastic bags.

I am about to start doing some voluntary work with the WDCS - i can't bear the thought of the Moray Firth losing its dolphins.

Our sealife is being hit so badly because plastic bags get into the sea and these lovely creatures eat them by mistake......

I don't need anymore reason to stop using plastic.........
