Bees

Not sure where to put this - animals? gardening? the great outdoors?

Do we have many/any beekeepers on here? I know there has been quite a bit of discussion in recent weeks and wondered if it might warrant it's own section?

I'm getting 2 nucs in April, I think Lachlan&marcus will be getting some soon. Anyone else? If there are a few of us with or especially those getting bees, I'm sure there will be MANY questions.

BTW, the beginners beekeeping courses in Aberdeen this year apparently had up to 60 people at each meeting - so there must be a few of us about!

I know Matt is desperate to become a beekeeper...

The Meetings

I was told I'd be contacted but it didn't happen. By the time I started to realize this, was wrapped up in the pottery. I should have called again, my fault. Beth

Who by?
Forget-me-Not

Bees

I think it was the secretary of the group. I have her name somewhere. She's the named contact on the website; I've forgotton the name of the site but it's deep in my favourites and can be found if needed.

I emailed her in the autumn and she said she'd contact me when the group started and at the time I spoke to Maria about it and then Smoth Hound was interested too. Maria mentioned it again a while back and I realized they hadn't called and I should have then.

Happy to make a new section if there is going to be lots of interest
Maria

I contacted Janice from Aberdeen and district beekeepers early feb (have email if you want it?). I'd already missed a few...but was extended a welcome if I wanted to join in late. They usually run beginners courses at Harlaw Academy jan-march and then practical demonstrations in spring. I missed out this time    Janice was very helpful should anyone want to contact her about the courses?
Lord_Azrael

You can add me as a 'wannabe' bee keeper.  Maybe one day I'll get some, I'd certainly be interested in seeing what people can add on here about it as I don't know that much yet....
Martin

I'm on the verge of making some top-bar hives with a view to getting some bees during the spring
kimmie

Judging from the above, I'd say yes please WG
wildgarlic

yeah, will have a sit down tonight - I would like to revamp the different forum topics as I still think that there is some overlap with some and some areas that are not catered for.

I have a hive set up and am hoping to get a swarm off a pal this summer. I'd love to share tips here!

I've been a member of the Scottish Beekepers' Asssociation for years - always hoping to actually get active, too... Have just cancelled my membership, after they'd had to remind me they had increased their membership fees. I realised that I haven't actually read their magazine for months now (which is why I'd missed the rise in fees). No chance now of ever getting bees set up - not in the near future, anyway, so I might as well save myself the fees! They include insurance for the hives, so it's a good idea to become member, if you do have bees.

To echo Kimmie's replies, I would love to get them. Just a thought though, what about approaching Aberdeen Beekeepers as a Neeps Group? Rather than as individuals, to see if they could cater for us as a group.

What do you think?

Really like the idea. Seems to be enough of us interested.
wildgarlic

That sounds like a great idea Matt - will talk to you about it tomorrow at Sass's.
Smooth Hound

this is a good idea

count me in - it's the Tuesday night I had a problem with

Finally read this thread - please count me in for whatever happens.

Did any progress get made with this?

East of Scotland Beekeepers have 4 beginners' nights/sessions coming up on Monday nights, beginning 28th April if anyone in the South of the area is interested (Dundee based).
Ina

I might be...
Diana

If you are, get in contact with them through their website (http://www.eastofscotlandbeekeepers.org.uk/) - might have to become a member (£7) and of course you can always have a lift from here

Bee Question

My small patch of land is next to a busy main road.  Would it be a bad idea to have an aspiration of beekeeping, would they likely end up on windscreens?
Diana

I think that would depend of which way the road was in relation to the "front" of the hive, and if there's a hedge. If there is a hedge, they'll be up and over that first, and therefore out of the way of windscreens.
