Great links page - so much info here on the 'low impact living' page of Reforesting Scotland.

If anyone is interested in Timber framed building either traditional or stick I can point you in the right direction in terms of structure, design and who does what and where.  In terms of what works there are many different variants dependent on style, budget etc. If you are looking at sensible build costs and low running costs then I would suggest following along the lines of JamesB's project which is a highly commendable example.
JamesB

there are lots of options, plenty of examples to follow.

The key is research and copy, you dont have to do research and development (and would you want to risk that on your house!).

if anyone is interested then I can recommend several good books. Its really worth visiting other projects as well such as findhorn.

one big problem is getting hold of suitable materials eg high spec windows locally but hopefully that is changing now otherwise exchange rates play a large role.

For instance, if you read the book from Findhorn then you find they had to import the breathable wall boards from Sweden in the 90's. There is now a manufacturer in Wales, I phone them up and they say they have a supplier in Grangemouth, great! I phone them up and find they have a distributer in Aberdeen! Right next to the Univerisy! So things have got better.
