April workshop craft groupHiya all - before SH went in hosp I promised I'd start the ball rolling for the April craft meet. It'll be at my place - unless anyone else wants to host?
Think we were talking of chinese/celtic calligraphy....any more ideas? I love the recycled basket making I spotted on another thread (dam my memory, can't think which clever neep showed them) Also, was wondering if folks want to bring kids along whether a fri evening would be better than a wed? I can set up something like dough craft for the kids.
As always you can bring your projects and share your know-how too.

That would be nice Maria, the crafty bit for the kids too.

I will try to get along, especially if I can bring the loud one She would love dough craft
I have been to the beach Andy and found some driftwood.. if you are coming along maybe you can tell me what (if anything special) you do to turn them into keyrings.
Edited to say that if Dale is coming along I would love to learn more about the folk art painting.

was just talking to mum this afternoon about starting a thread, would host here but about the furthest away from everyone although anyones welcome
i will be coming and have some calligraphy stuff somewere so will bring it along although i have not managed to do any that looks nice or readable (remember i can not draw a straight line even with a ruler) so dont ask me to demonstrate
as for the keyrings MN will bring a few things along and we can play

I think SH is a mind reader he called again last night (not long after I'd posted this) and asked if i'd started the ball rolling with the craft night. Can't you tell he's itching to be back.
The craft night at yours sounds fab Andy - no saying we can't do 2 in April. Another thought...the weather is getting better bit by bit at last. So, it may well be an idea to do 2 crafts a month...one light indoorsy stuff - kid friendly...and one workshoppy thingymibob? Hope you all know what I'm talking about-ish. lol

My ewes are due to start lambing by then so I am probably not going to come to the next couple, I'll have to play it by ear.

when in april?
|
Maria
|
Eeeek - didn't mean this Friday!!! Hope I've not mislead folks...was talking about an April craft meet.
Was trying to gather idea's in readiness and figure when the best time to plan it for would be. Will of course pm you my address/directions Kimmie and anyone else who's thinking of coming to an APRIL meet. Now, really must think of the best fri to do it. Need to be away for a few days in april - but not sure which weekend that will land - promise to post a date here asap.
Will miss you Julie if you can't make it we're not too far from you...but understand if you're needed at home.
|
kimmie

sorry it was my fault...lack of sleep = mis-read sorry , course you meant April...so did i ...honest

whats the plan are we going with wednesday as usual or friday?
maria are you still ok hoasting? will bring SH over if hes up to it
|
Maria
|
Arrrrgggg - the man from Turra he nearly home - and I've not sorted a craft night meet!!!
Shall we go with a fri night? I know the kids are off school next week so that will make it easier but Fri might be good for a change. Folks might relax a bit more knowing works not calling the day after?
How does Fri 10th sound? Give SH time to settle back in and get a bit of R & R too? Happy to re-think if this isn't good for the majority....or if you're up for it Andy, perhaps there could be a 2nd april meet at your place too?
|
andybebbington
|
10th sounds good to me
a 2nd meet here would be ok sometime aswell sure her downstairs wouldnt mind
|
nina
|
Her down stairs would love to host here.I'm sure we'll all fit in.We can use both rooms if we need.Any date suits me.(I don't get out much)To avoid confusion-Andy is upstairs on his computer so "her downstairs"is me!!!.Still wide awake as usual at night.

Crafty meetProbably can't do this one. My Mother will have just left. (Need I say more Maria ) and David will be coming back late from Fraserburgh. (all week long hours )Think it's going to be a large bottle of wine and 24 hours before Lisa arrives.
However, next time count me in!

Thanks folks for letting us know. Anyone else - can/can't do?
More than happy to change date (earlier/later) and day to suit Although I know we'll never find one that will suit everyone. I do like the idea of having 2 per month, each in a different area, so more folk can meet and craft.
WG will you come and be photographer (of craft not peeps)? We might even get you to dabble in some crafty stuff.

Sorry, I can't make the 10th either. My sister and her family are staying from the 5th to the 13th so I will be busy.. hope you have fun

im having my stitches out on the 10th, so ill have to see,
so maybe we should start a list of those that can and cant make the 10th and see if its a good day for it, or whether another would be better, just a thought

school hols for the next two weeks - and I have my daughter visiting from Sat - til Easter Monday. I'm sure she'd be up for a crafty evening if we can manage one - 10th is ok for me, but then so is any evening that week (apart from Sunday 5th!)

Have you decided on a day yet?
|
Smooth Hound
|
maria said something about the 10th , i think
|
Maria
|
I did but don't think it's much good for most.
Also - I've actually just pm'd Andy to beg a change around. I have a prob that I didn't think of before!! Our lil kitten Henry has ringworm as it can pass to people I'm not sure it's a good idea to have it here. It's not something I know a great deal about - first time we've had anything like this in the house! Vet says it's something that's just 'in' the country?! Poor lil blighters lost a lot of fur on his head.
Sorry - to get back to the point - I've just asked Andy if we could host the first one at his place. Apols Andy if this is no good, or puts you on the spot?
|
andybebbington
|
yeah we can have it here the 10th is fine by me or any other night that suits everyone, i am off on the 10th so could be anytime but working till 6 most nights so a half six/seven oclock start would be best
not the biggest living room but have a big tabel in the kitchen so we can spread out if needed. there is also the laithe in the shed aswell if anyone wants ago although i need to get a sharpener for my chisles and clean the shed out a bit but would be a encouagement to get it done
have calligraphy ink and brushes/books etcs and maybe some pens somewhere i could route out also been experimenting making bowls and things from the old lps and we could have ago at that
other than that just bring anything your working on
|
Smooth Hound

the bowls out of lps sounds mysterious

Thanks Andy - I'll be there and Carrot Lover. Have strict instructions not to go to a neep meet without her from now on.
Get to meet Nina too
Pretty sure Carrot Lover has a Chinese Calligraphy set - remember trying some characters with her. Lovely stuff. Also got a Celtic Art book from the library - love the spirals. Will bring some graph paper so folks can practice if they want...it's a bit like dot to dot to get going. Lettering looks pretty tricky!
Have you got any driftwood still lying about Andy? Would love to have a go at putting a chinese or celtic character on one for a keyring. Will make a donation towards future beach combing. Hey that's a good idea for another craft meet. Beachcraft - loved the baskets I saw made of things from the beach by jaydee http://neeps.myfreeforum.org/ftopic6447-0.php
|
andybebbington
|
yeah i have plenty of drift wood in the shed and weather/tide permitting will be on the beach with the dog at some point tomorrow doing a bit of gathering it is amazing what you find.
beach craft would be good could combine it with a walk along a beach somewere to see what we can collect
so it will be friday 10th at mine will be in from mid afternoon so just come when you want and stay as late as you want we are night birds so no hurry to leave
can send directions to anyone that wants them just PM me

Is this turning into a quick beach forage if the weather's nice - how far did you say you were from the beach?

| Maria wrote: | Is this turning into a quick beach forage if the weather's nice - how far did you say you were from the beach? |
no most days are a beach forage for me, the beach is about a 2 min walk out of the door down the road 100yrds then down the side of football pitch and your thereat the river estury, we can see the sea out of the window and hear it if the windows open
|
Maria

If the weather's fine you'll see this neep going awol for 10 mins. Just love the beach. Not sure i could live so close to the waves though?

not the greatest pics to late and rubbish light
a single formally known as chers shoop shoop song
a randomly painted gibert and sullivan 12 inch
same again upside down
edited by wg to show the pics rather than the code

So - it's beach combing if it's fine, or Andy's collected driftwood/ you're own beach treasure, if it's not. Then to be painted/inked with celtic/chinese character. Will dig around for some suitable characters to bring along e.g luck, light, love, friendship...and on and on. Any requests?
Carrot Lover will be impressed.
Just realized it will be good friday - lol it will be 'good' this year.

ME i have hundreds i have picked up over the years at roups and carboots in box lots just to get one or two of them and ended up with so many i would never listern to.

Wooo-hooo - that'll be me wanting to experiment with some bizzare shaped bowls please.
Do you think we could fashion a tall one for my knitting needles - some of the dam things wont fit into the whisky tubes. Oooh and trays for my little yogurt pot seedling when I have to move em for hardening off? Bet we could think of a hundred and one uses for them, artsomely pretty and practical.
|
Julie

Clever bowls Andy, you're full of good ideas.
I also fancy the beach combing trip. I will try and leave the 10th open but you will need to pm some directions.

we will have to work out shared transport for this one, ill pay my share if anyone can pick me up on the way through
|
Maria
|
Who's gonna take the craft piccies (only the crafty stuff - not peeps WG if you're coming) my camera is more socialble than me and might go awol again.
Weather looks a bit wonky - but I think it'll clear up for good friday - we still beach combing? Al will be meeting us on his way from work. He loves the sound of driftwood. I told him and Bella about the dragon wing one.
I'm gonna be miffed if it rains.
Shared transport sounds good SH - 2 spaces in our car.

ta, by the way you could take a coat

I won't be able to go now, Gordon is going to help Shelly with a big job so I will have too much to do on my own here.
Still, maybe next time.

The tide was out
Thank you so much Andy/Nina for hosting this evening - I know I said it when we left with all our treasure but need to say it here too. Was a lovely evening. Beach combing, painting beach stone, eggs, and making LP bowls. Thanks ever so much for crafting fun, food, company....and the girls treasure!! Everyone had a great time. Will download beach picci from my phone asap, to show off the perfect red sunset & resident swans.
Was great to see ZC and family again too - will be in touch ZC before the weekend's out to arrange more beach fun on monday. Cross your fingers for a fine day.

Had a fantastic time.
Big Thanks to Andy for letting us raid his stash. DD is still playing with her items.
Also thanks for the fabby food...Yummy.
I got some super sea glass to play with. Filled my record bowl with jelly sweeties and gave it to NGR he was delighted.
Need to find some funky places to put our painted stones and slates.
|
Smooth Hound
|
can someone tell me how to make an lp bowl
|
zombiecazz
|
We did it with a boiling kettle and a LP.
Hold edges of LP over steaming kettle until it softens.
mold/pull into shape.
Hold next bit over then mold/pull into shape.
continue until you have the desired bowl.
|
Smooth Hound
|
do you use a mold, like nother bowl, or just free hand

Last night was great Andy!!
I had a fab time. Thankyou for the earings.
It was great meeting your family.
Nina's lovely.
Can't wait until the next craft night.
They're always great.

No SH... You just use your hands.
It's very fun. Mine turned out pritty good for a first try.
|
Julie
|
Sounds like you had fun.
Good job I couldn't come, the kids have given me a stomach bug and I might have passed it on to you lot. I'm sitting/lying in bed and just getting up to feed the lambs etc.
It's the curse Every time Gordon goes away something goes wrong.
He's helping to put a new floor in the pub Shelly has just acquired in King st. It is over the road from the uni, so she's after the student business.
Anyway, I will catch the next meet with a bit of luck. I like the idea of moveable venues for the sake of accessibility for all members.
