Having read your welcome thread where there was a question about recycling books which cannot be reused as pages missing, here's my current solution but am always willing to learn...
It's not often I have to do this, but I compost the pages (in batches if necessary) and use the covers as kindling for the wood burner.

Hi Bigporgy - and welcome by the way - what do you suggest I do with all the old video tapes I want to get rid of? Is there a suitable recycling site or will I have to ask around to see if anyone wants to use them?

Yeah - I was thinking of offering them to a friend with a wood burner... But composting is a good idea, too. After all, there aren't that many of them. I really don't understand why the companies that recycle phone books can't recycle paperbacks - maybe I should find out which company does the paper recycling for Aberdeenshire, and ask them direct!

Another 'waster'Books Abroad at Rhynie shred any books they can't send overseas or sell locally (the non-educational ones) and the shreddings go for horse bedding. I don't know if they will take books purely for shredding but it is worth giving them a ring.
An extreme idea for old video tapes if no-one else wants them - knit or crochet them into shopping bags. I don't know how strong the tapes are, but you could knit 2 or 3 together. A lot simpler to find new homes for them though!

They have TV stuff recorded on them that I don't want to keep any more but could be recorded over and used.
I have to flick through them first just to make sure there are no recordings of school concerts etc. Irreplaceable memories eh?
Have you a use for them WG?

Hi Ina and Julie, sorry that i have not been on earlier but busy doing loads of other things and did not get an email telling me about your question.
Anyway re Video tapes I am not sure but probably there is NO recycling for them at the moment as they contain multi materials ie differentn types of plastic and probably also metals. Cost is the issue. Presumably it is the same with audio cassettes. Both are a nuisance at the treatment plants in Inverbotndie and Mintlaw as the tapes ravel around the equipment and eventually stop it so they have to be manually( why is it man does all of the hard work?) removed They are seeing increasing quantities of both.
Thinking of the waste hierarchy the best option would br to offer then to anyone who wants them for re-use. Is there a site on Neeps for that ?
or to Freecycle or one of the other sites

Thankyou BP, I had a feeling that might be the case. I think there will be folks who still want to use their video recorders for a long time yet, so it shouldn't be hard to find a recipient or two for them. I will keep some of them myself as i like to record stuff so I can rewind the bits I couldn't quite hear.........getting old and deafish  Discovering subtitles in a big way too.
