Anglers urged to put back any salmon caught

Anglers are being urged to return all the fish they catch to the water

Anglers in Scotland are being urged to put back all the salmon they catch in a bid to conserve stocks.

The Association of Salmon Fishery Boards (ASFB) said numbers were down on almost all of the major rivers.

At present more than 70% of salmon caught are released back into the water but the group said there was a "strong case" to make it 100%.

ASFB managing director Andrew Wallace said he hoped it would only be a "temporary setback" for fishing.

trouble is is that if its polution in the rivers , will it help, there are other things they should be insisting on changing as well. like the watering of cows in rivers, the use of some fertelisers higher up the river, the dumping of milk, the changing water levels of rivers nd burns, due to irrigation of potato crops. and thats just off the top of my head

As far a some rivers goes, they should do more to clear up sewage before it is released into the river.  Most sewage outfalls are a disgrace and the water is full of sludge and.... well, sewage!

The Don is very bad with pollution and is filthy, it is high time they made some progress in clearing this up instead of moaning to anglers.
More efficient trawlers does not help either, nor does the clearing of small burns and ditches around fields as this does not hold back any water.
I saw a small burn just lately that had been cleared, this may sound good but it was a disaster as it used to be full of water being held back.  This gave shelter to small fish, and there used to be a lot of medium sized fish as well up to a couple of pounds.  Now all there is is a big machine created deep ditch with a trickle of water running down the middle!
No fish, nothing!!

I was down at the Don today and the amount of filth going down was a total disgrace.
I wish they would do more to stop sewage going in with some of the contents still there!!  Where it can be done, could they not run the outfall through reed beds instead of just going through a drain into the rivers?
I know it wouldn't catch everything, but it would clear a lot of it up.

There is also too much Seals and Dolphins around as well now.

It is time there numbers were controlled again.

Andrew Wallace might do well to think about doing something about the real problems before blaming anglers, they are but a small (tiny) part of the problem.
A trawler can scoop up thousands of salmon in one go, an angler can only catch but a few a season (if they are lucky).

NO, I am not a keen angler, when I do go to try my luck I catch nothing but a cold
