Allotment help - recommendationsHi everyone,
Have an allotment in Aberdeen that is needing dug over. Don't want to spray but can't see me getting much turned over and dug and planted by myself too soon.
Anyone know of someone who can help me out? Willing to pay for their digging of course. Tried the few people I have seen around the site but they are busy on their own ones.
Fingers crossed
Thank you

Have you thought of hiring a rotovator, you could manure/compost as you dig the ground. The down side is you will have tons of new couch grass roots but they can be weeded easily enough, it just takes time, just a thought, cheers Dave

Thanks Dave, have been getting on with digging. Only managed a small section so far but hoping to dig over again tomorrow and get something planted in there, not too late for my tatties I hope.
Any ideas for other things to plant as I go along? My seeds haven't really come to much, I think it has maybe been too cold or something.
Anywhere in town I can buy veg plants from? All seems to be seeds only I have seen so far?
Thanks

local garden centers have plug plants, or ask your neighbours for cuttings in exchange for something you can give in return(no jokes please )....and you could push some stakes in the ground (either side of your planting rows) attach bits of garden hose over them so you have arches over your plant and then cover the whole thing with plastic sheeting...you have ready made cloche then ...that will protect the seeds for a while...plug plants could be covered with cut off coke or lemonade bottles for indivual cloches

Have you considered NOT digging but laying a bed instead? Its just layers of various materials over a weed-unfriendly base layer.

Agree
You can always make a hole through the materials (paper, cardboard, mulch, straw etc) and pop some plug plants in - yes you'll get a few weeds....but you'll have something to eat too. I've done this with 2 new raised beds - so far so good, the plugs are settling nicely. Also planted some lettuce in there for the slugs to eat...to keep them away from my brassica's....have fingers crossed. Oh, and have also put some dill in - supposed to be a good companion.

which allotment?Hi Spike 2,
Which allotment are you on? I only ask, as Aberdeen Forward, do community composting at Garthdee and Slopefield, as well as having a plot at Garthdee.
Wish you all the best with your allotment - just remember to keep the weeds at bay.
