60 amp fuse wire

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can buy some 60 amp fusewire?

As the mains enters our property, we have what I thought was a consumer unit with a main switch visible.  Inside, there is a single ceramic fuse unit labelled '60A' from which the cable runs into the house consumer unit (this contains mcb/mccbs with buttons on the front for resetting).

I always thought that domestic power had a fuse rating of 100 amps, which was then divided into the various ring mains, each with an appropriate breaker or fuse, but it looks as though ours has only a 60 amp rating.

A reasonably thorough (though not exhaustive) search shows plenty of fuse wire for sale in the smaller denominations (5a, 16a, 30a), but not 60.

Does anyone know of a source, or is this one of those things that only qualified electricians can get hold of?

The fuse hasn't blown, so this isn't an emergency .  I would just be interested to know before one occurs, rather than after!

Cheers

Welly

I've just checked my fuse wire that I keep near my unit, but that bonly goes up to 30 and that's for the high power loads (cooker etc) and my wiring was probably installed in the late neolithic age!!
60 is one hell of a size, are you sure that's what's supposed to be there?

Hi Welly...

Just had a word with my OH about this...

He is saying that this could be your utility suppliers fuse, and should this ever blow, then you should contact your electricity supplier to replace it.

If the fuse is before your electricity meter its the utility Co's responsibilityto replace... if it is after your meter then it is your responsibility to replace...

He also mentioned that you could pick this fusewire up at any electrical wholesaler (ross electrical, edmundson electrical etc etc)

I would think this would be correct and the unit should be sealed, but it may be taken from another building if you are a spur feed (Taken off a building with a main feed into it).

Thanks everyone, for your replies.

I think you're right, that the fuse in question was installed by our supplier, as it appears to be at the main isolator switch (before the consumer unit).

I may get some fuse wire just in case, but otherwise I'll leave it alone.

Thanks again.

and if YOU touch it they will take you to court under Health and Safety and you WILL be taken to cleaners. I am not talking a few thousand here I am talking tens of thousands...had chat a while back with electric people installing my supply about a neighbour threatening to cut our shared cable.

to quote 'he will only do it once and we will hound him until his dieing day for everything he owns and more!'

How jolly

BT will do the same if you touch the wire outside the part you own, at one time is was the box it's self.
Welly

I think it still is the box, although there is a bit in the box that you are alowed to fiddle with (a removable panel alows you to wire in an extension).

Mind you, they do actually sell the boxes themselves I think... Bit of a contradiction.

You couldn't touch that bit at one stage
